Hello, dear Friends and real hard workers!

Some of you told me that the former exercise was quite long to do, especially because of exercise 3 "SOS student" (as one of you named it! ) which was interesting, but "ever so hard because of the tenses to use". I know that this sort of work can be difficult but I"m glad most of you like it. Here's another one...
This 95 is quite hard, I must admit, a real with tricky expressions and Maxwell being hard on you again!
(Thanks Maxwell for your contribution! )
The "correction" will be online on Tuesday, November 29th..
Take care of the translation into French... To help you, you have THE FORCE, as ever.

    I) Translate into English:
- Encore ?

    II) Translate into French:
Maude started up the engine. “And we won’t take any more of your time.” She threw the gear into first. “Nice chatting with you”, she cried, and zoomed off.
The cop spun around as the truck sped by. He watched for a moment, speechless. Then he ran to his motorcycle, hopped on, and gave chase.
“I think he’s following us”, said Harold, uneasily shaking his head.
“Is he?” said Maude cheerfully, “Is that his siren? My, my. How they do like to play games. Well, here goes.”
Maude changed gears and accelerated to top speed. Careening down the highway, she dodged cars and changed lanes. The cop on the motorcycle stayed with her, his siren screaming like a soul from hell. Suddenly, Maude made a hard left turn, sending the truck screeching in a half circle. She raced back the highway, passing the cop on the other side of the road. Cars pulled over out of her way, while the cop made a similar U-turn and darted after her. Maude immediately made another screeching U-turn and flew off in her original direction. The cop, taken unawares, tried to follow her, but the traffic around him was in total confusion. He dodged an oncoming Ford, ran up over the embankment, and finally halted, sliding and spinning, in a muddy ditch.
Colin Higgins, Harold and Maude, 1971.

III) S. O. S. student needing help! (So many mistakes! Please write a full correction! )
Maude, like driver, is different of the others drivers the policeman used to stoping. She had not rather talking at the policemen which would like making her to explain why she has droven so carreleslly. Maud don’t mind to be holden responsable of that she have down, but she wandered which will happen to her and if she should go in prison. (Do NOT imitate, but, help him, please!)
... not alone, of course... I give you THE FORCE!

    Hello Here4U
Many thanks for the funniest extract we've ever been given to translate (and with many phrasal verbs and resultative constructions
    Have a wonderful week !

    I)Translate into English:
However commendable your intentions may have been, the result has been a complete disaster, a real catastrophe!

Are these the only two possible choices ? I'd like you to speak first, as I don't want to steal the show from you.

Ever since he arrived, he had been given a position of responsibility. Now, he has been bossing his coworkers around and putting the blame on everyone. How come he has turned into such a killjoy ?

    4) - Tu me rejoins pour la réunion ? - Encore ?
    - Are you joining me at the meeting ? - Again ? My word, you're suffering from acute meetingitis here ! I'm kidding... Give me five minutes for the call of nature and I'll be with you.

How rude ! The account manager has hung up on me with a "Well, remain as you are!" because what she offered didn't suit me. That's it, I'll never buy anything from them ever again...

My, my. The cop on the motorcycle stayed with her, his siren screaming like a soul from hell. Suddenly, Maude made a hard left turn, sending the truck screeching in a half circle.

    Hello Here4u,
following your advices, I tried to translate without making word to word translation. I hope that I have respected the sense of the texts.
Thanks to you and Maxwell for these very interesting and funny exercices.
    Ready for marking
    I) Translate into English:
Laudable as your intents had been, the result was a full calamity, a real disaster !
Are they the only two choices ? I would want you to speak first as I don’t want to steal the show from you.

As soon as he arrived, a management position had been given to him. From now he is bossing his colleagues around and laying into everyone. How boring he was become  ?

Maxwell 4) - Tu me rejoins pour la réunion ? - Encore ?
    - You join me at the meeting ? - Again ? My word, you’re affected by « meetings about having meetings » here ! I’m joking… Time to stop over and I’m yours.

What a rude person ! The client service manager hung up on me saying « So, just keep it up » as what she was offering didn’t suit me. It’s over, I will never buy at them.

2 ) Are they the only two possible choice ? I would like you to be the first one to talk because I don't want to steal your thunder .
3 ) Dice his arrival , he was given an executive position . Now he bosses his coworkers around an blames all of them . How did he become such a killjoy ?
Maxwell 4 )are you joining me at the meeting ? - Again ? upon my word you are reached by an acute meetingitis here ! I'm Kidding ... Just a short stop at the rest room and I am here with you .
Maxwell 5) How shameless she is ! the account manager hung up on me saying " well, stay the way you are ." Because what she was offering didn't suit me .
That 's it I'll never buy from them again .

Hello Here4u , and all hardworkers , here is my work , OK FOR CORRECTION

    I) Translate into English:
    1) However well- intentioned your intentions might have been, the result was a full desaster, a real catastrophe.

    2) Are they the two only possible choices? ..I would like you to talk first because I don't want to steal the show from you.

3)Since he arrived , he was given a position of responsability. Now he is firmly ordering his colleagues and he pick on everyone..How come that he was become such a killjoy ?

Maxwell 4) Do you come with me at the meeting ? " Once again ? Good Heavens, you are mad of meetings for the sake of having meetings , here ".I am joking , just the time to do a " natural need" and I will be with you.

Maxwell 5) - what such a shameless person The Customer service représentative hang me up on with " alright, stay as you are" because what she offered me didn't agree me. It's over. I won't buy their goods any more

    II) Translate into French:
Maude started up the engine. ?And we won't take any more of your time.? She threw the gear into first. ?Nice chatting with you?, she cried, and zoomed off.
The cop spun around as the truck sped by. He watched for a moment, speechless. Then he ran to his motorcycle, hopped on, and gave chase.
?I think he's following us?, said Harold, uneasily shaking his head.
?Is he?? said Maude cheerfully, ?Is that his siren? My, my. How they do like to play games. Well, here goes.?

    III)
Maude, like driver, is different of the others drivers the policeman used to stoping. She had not rather talking at the policemen which would like making her to explain why she has droven so carreleslly. Maud don't mind to be holden responsable of that she have down, but she wandered which will happen to her and if she should go in prison

Maude as a driver is different from the other drivers that the policeman is use to stopping . She would rather not talk to the policeman who would like to make her explain why she had driven so carelessly

    Bonjour Here4u,

    I - Into English

1 – Praiseworthy as your intentions may have been, the result has been a complete disaster, a real mess !
2 – Are these the only two possible choices ? I’d like you to speak first since I don’t want to steal the show from you
3 – As soon as he arrived he was given a leadership. Now he rules his colleagues with an iron hand putting the blame on everyone. How can he has become such a killjoy ?
4 – Will you join me at the meeting ? Again ? My word, you’re suffering from a ‘mania for meetings’ here ! I’m joking…Just a ‘natural break’ and I’m yours
5 – What a nerve ! The business leader has hung up on me saying ‘well stay as you are’ because what she offered didn’t suit me. It’s over, I will never again buy anything from them..

    II – Into French

Maud started the engine. “And we won’t take any more of your time”. She threw the gear into first. “Nice chatting with you” she cried, and zoomed off. The cop spun around as the truck sped by. He watched for a moment, speechless. Then he ran to his motorcycle, hopped on, and gave chase. “I think he’s following us” said Harold, uneasily shaking his head. “Is he ?” said Maude cheerfully, “It that his siren ?” My, my. How they do like to play games. Well, her he goes”. Maude changed gears and accelerated to top speed. Careening down the highway, she dodged cats and changed lanes. He dodged an oncoming Ford, ran up over the embankment, and finally halted, sliding and spinning in a muddy ditch.

    III – S.O.S. Desperate Student..

Maude, AS A driver, is different FROM the other(S) drivers the policeman iS used to STOPPING. She WOULD RATHER NOT TO HAVE TO TALK TO the policeman WHO would like her to explain why she haD BEEN DRIVING so CARELESSLY. Maude DIDN’T mind BEING HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT she HAD DONE, but she WONDERED WHAT WILL happen to her and if she WOULD go to prison

Time flies and I forgot my duty... Sorry for being late again. Have a nice week-end

Hello HERE4U and you my dear colleagues.
As usual, I've enjoyed to do this exercise, I would like to add that your exercises are not too long for me, always interesting to seaRch the best way of translation, especially this time with Harold and Maud !
Thanks a lot Here4u and you, Maxwell.

    I) Translate into English:
    1. As laudable your intentions were, the result was a complete disaster, a real catastrophe !
    2. Are there the only two possible choices ? I would prefer you speak first, for I don't want to steal the show from you.
    3. As soon as he arrived, he was given a job (in a position) of responsibility. Now, he rules his colleagues with a rod of iron and lay into all. How did he become such a wet blanket ?
Maxwell 4) - Tu me rejoins pour la réunion ? - Encore ?
Are you joining me at the meeting ? AGAIN ? my word ! you are affected of mania for meetings here ! I am joking.... Give me some time for a "loo stop", and I'll be with you in a couple of minutes.
Completely shameless ! the customer manager just hung up on me, saying : oh well, stay like you are ! because what she offered me didn't suit me. That's it, I'll buy anything there again.

Colin Higgins, Harold and Maude, 1971.

    III) S. O. S. student needing help!
Maude, as a driver, was different from the other drivers the policeman was used to stopping. She would rather not to talk to the policeman who would like her to explain why she was driving so carelessly. Maud didn’t mind to be held responsible of what she has done, but she wondered which would happen to her if she would go to prison.

It was a pleasure for me.
    ready to be corrected.

    - Do you meet up at the meeting ? - Again ? My word ! You are suffering from" meeting mania" here ! I am kidding... Could you excuse me for a moment, then I'll be with you.
What a bad-mannered person ! The account manager has hung up on me telling "Well, remain like you are" because, what she offered, didn't work for me. It's all over, I will no longer buy anything from them...

II) TRANSLATE INTO FRENCH :Maude started up the engine. "And we won't take any more of your time." She threw the gear into first. "Nice chatting with you", she cried, and zoomed off.The cop spun around as the truck sped by. He watched for a moment, speechless. Then he ran to his motorcycle, hopped on, and gave chase. "I think he is following us", said Harold, uneasily shaking his head."Is he " said Maude cheerfully, "Is that his siren ? My, my. How they do like to play games. Well, here goes".Maude changed gears and accelerated to top speed.

    Hello, Dear Friends!

Here is ex. 95 corrected; once again, you did very well, in spite of the difficulties.
Bravo !
    I)Translate into English:
No matter how commendable your intentions had been, the result was a total shambles, a real catastrophe!

    -“aussi louable” = No matter how + adjectif/ However+ adjectif/ Adjectif as… (Attention ! pas d’inversion du sujet)
    - le résultat = the result/ the outcome
    - catastrophe/ disaster/ calamity/ a shambles (uncountable)

Are these my only two options? I'd rather you spoke first as I don't want to steal your thunder.

    - “my only two options” = attention à la place de "only”, avant le numéral.
    - I’d like you to speak/ I’d rather you spoke/
    - voler la vedette = to steal the show from you/ steal your thunder/

As soon as he arrived, he was given a corner office. Now, he’s bossing his co-workers around and takes it out on everyone. How can he be such a kill-joy?

    - “on lui a donné”: ON => forme passive => he was given…
    - un poste à responsabilités = position of responsibility/ senior position/ management position/ a corner office = (bureau donné aux «executives")
    - mener à la baguette = to rule with an iron fist/ to be stern/ to boss around/
    - s’en prendre à = to lash out at/ to take it out on someone/ to bully someone/ to pick on people

Maxwell 4) - Tu me rejoins pour la réunion ? - Encore ?
Will you see me at the meeting? - Again? / Another one! My word!/ My my… You must be suffering from acute "meetingitis" here! I’m ki- dding!/ I’m joking! Just give me the time to satisfy the call of nature and I’m all yours.

    - Ma parole!= My word! / My, my/
    - "réunionite aiguë" = "meetingitis" / meeting-mania/
    - escale technique = refueling stop/ a technical break/ a technical stop/ a technical call/ a stopover/; ceux-ci sont de véritables “pauses techniques”. Maxwell avait à l’esprit une cause plus personnelle: a call of nature/ a biological need/

How inconsiderate! The client service manager hung up on me saying “Well! Don’t change anything, then!”, because what she was suggesting sounded unfit to me. That’s it! I won’t buy anything from them again!

    - Sans gêne = inconsiderate/ careless/ thoughtless/ heedless/
    - raccrocher au nez de = to hang upon someone

    II) Translate into French:
Maude started up the engine. “And we won’t take any more of your time.” She threw the gear into first. “Nice chatting with you”, she cried, and zoomed off.
The cop spun around as the truck sped by. He watched for a moment, speechless. Then he ran to his motorcycle, hopped on, and gave chase.

Colin Higgins, Harold and Maude, 1971.

III) S. O. S. student needing help! (So many mistakes! Please write a full correction!
Maude, like driver, is different of the others drivers the policeman used to stoping. She had not rather talking at the policemen which would like making her to explain why she has droven so carreleslly. Maud don’t mind to be holden responsable of that she have down, but she wandered which will happen to her and if she should go in prison.

Maude, as a driver (1), is different from (2) the other drivers the policeman was used to stopping (3). She’d rather not talk to (4) the policeman who would like to make her explain (5) why she had driven (6) so carelessly. Maud didn’t mind being held (7) responsible for what she had done (8), but she wondered what would happen (9) to her if she went (10) to prison.

    (1) ”as a driver”= en tant que
    (2) “different from stg/someone”; aux EU, on entend “different than”; ne pas imiter un jour d'examen en Europe.
    (3) Ne pas confondre : used to + Base verbale = qui exprime une action qui existait dans le passé mais n’existe plus maintenant, et “to be used to + BV + ing= avoir l’habitude de. Test N° 105239.
    (4) “she’d rather talk” = she would rather + infinitive sans to ; à la negation = she’d rather NOT talk. N° 109627.
    (5) “to explain something TO someone”; to make someone DO something” = idée de contrainte.
(« what would happen (9)»)
