    Bac/Idea of progress

    Bonjour,
Je vais passer mon oral bientôt et pour me rassurer j'aimerais bien avoir votre avis sur ma notion d'anglais s'il vous plaît et je voudrais savoir si j'ai fait des fautes ou pas. Merci d' avance et voici ma notion :

    Idea of progress
I'm going to present to you the notion of progress. First of all I want to give a definition of this notion: the notion of progress is the idea that the world can be enhanced in terms of science, technology, rights and quality of life. The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement ,a development or a change – a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place. In order to illustrate this notion we talked in class about the progress in medicine. So to what can we extent can we say that scientific progress can allow an improvement of humanity? To answer this question I will present three documents.

The first document I have chosen is an extract from an online, scientific magazine, writen 6 years ago. It's about designer babies, a designer baby being is a baby developing from an embryo created by in-vitro fertilization and selected beacause it had or lacked particular genes, the genetic makeup often having been modified by genetic. The text starts with what sounds like an order at a fast food restaurant while actually it's somebody who is ordering the physical features of his/her future baby. Indeed, nowadays, modifying the DNA of an embryo has become a reality. The extract speaks about PGD (pre-implantation genetic diagnosis). A geneticist tells us the positive aspect of this technique, which can predict certain genetic diseases in potential embryos and ensuring that the chosen one is healthy. So we can say that PGD will help in babies' selection which will be more resistant and more perfect because the parents can choose all the features.

Secondly, we saw an extract from a national American daily newspaper that speaks about Molly. Molly is a teenager who was born with a rare disease called Fanconi's Anemia. Molly was destined to die before the age of 7 but in 2000, a bone marrow transplant cured Molly. The cord blood cells transplanted into Molly came from her then newborn brother,Adam. Adam was genetically choosen in a test-tube after a PGD, a healthy embryo was selected and then Adam was implanted in his mother's womb. He saved his older sister thanks to PGD. This text shows that the medical advances nowadays allow to create babies who will be a perfect match to cure children who are affected by diseases which were until there incurable.

Finally, the last document is an extract from a novel, Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley, published in 1932. It depicts a dystopia, a totalitarian world in which there's a man prod of babies, remindig us of fordism. The extract focuses the description of the scientific process of the production of babies. In this world, babies are conditioned to become either manual workers or intellectuals/ leaders. The author describes a world where people would be all perfected thanks to scientific advances. Today we can say in a sense that the science fiction become science fact because now we can change a lot of things in our lives, we can save people thanks to PGD and we can also create beings which can get closer more and more to the perfection.

To conclude, we can say that scientific progress can allow an improvement of humanity by giving for example, better chances of cure for certain people affected by grave diseases. The fact of making humans a little more perfect thanks to PGD or modification of DNA can certainly lead to an improvement of humanity. The humain being would be more resistant and strong because every person would be selected fom a healthy embryo.

    Bonjour,
    - To answer this question I will present three documents: annonce ton plan.

    - writen: orthographe.
    - a designer baby being (enlever being) is a baby developing (participe passé) from an embryo
    - The extract speaks about PGD (pre-implantation genetic diagnosis: un extrait ne parle pas.
    - A geneticist tells us (about) the positive aspect (pluriel)of this technique,
    - So we can say that PGD will help in(enlever in) babies' selection

    - Secondly, we saw an extract from a national American daily newspaper that speaks ( idem)about Molly.
    - Adam was genetically choosen (orthographe)

    - The extract focuses (on) the description of the scientific process of the production of babies.
    - the (enlever THE)science fiction become science fact: ?,
    - beings which can get closer more and more (enlever MORE AND MORE)to the perfection.

    - better chances of (pas la bonne préposition)cure for (enlever FOR) certain people affected by grave diseases.
