    Message de arual13 posté le 30-05-2015 à 13:33:49 (S | E | F)
    Bonjour!
Je suis actuellement en Terminale L et je passe mes oraux fin juin... J'ai préparé toutes mes notions. Je sollicite donc votre aide pour m'aider à me corriger et comprendre mes erreurs.
    Merci d'avance :-)

    Myths and Heroes

I am going to talk about the notion of Myths and Heroes. First of all, I'd like to give a definition of a myth. A myth can be a traditional story concerning the early history of a people or explaining a natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events. But it also something that many people believe in but that is false or doesn't exist. The myth like the American Dream doesn't refer to this last two definitions, is early a popular belief or story that has become associated with a person, institution, etc., and which can convey the ideals of a given society and create inspiring heroic figures. A hero is someone who did something that other people couldn't or wouldn't do. In the United States, the most powerful defining myth is the American Dream. To illustrate this notion, I have chosen 3 documents : « Obama's speech » who extoling the myth of the American Dream , the film « Invicible » who speaks of a hero illustrating the American Dream and « the end of America » , 2 press articles which criticate this myth. It's particulary interesting to wonder if the American Dream is a reality. To answer these questions, I will first examine what is the American Dream, then, in a second part, I will focus on the heroes of the American Dream. After discussing that, we will ask on the end of the American Dream.

First, this speech which was told in 2004 by Obama we learn about the American Dream. It was the dream of immigrants who-wanted to start from scratch and climb the social the social ladder in this new world, it was fueled by the rags-to-riches stories of famous American businessman, and it was perpetuated through real or imagineray characters who illustrated the aspirations of the American people. He says if you work hard and persevere, you will make it in the U.S. There's always hope for a better life. He adds that America is a different country, I quote : « A beacon of freedom and opportunity » which is a reference to the Statue of Liberty. It's a « magical face ». For him, In the U.S, people have « inalienable rights » defined in the Declaration of Independance and the Constitution : freedom of speech, freedom from fear and want as the Norman Rockwell's paintings called « the Four Liberties » show it. You fulfil this dream for yourself, but also for the next generations. He considers America as « generous » and « tolerant ». Everybody can realize the American Dream. In his book Immigrants kids, Russell Freedman speaks about American Dream. He defines thys myth telling through hard work and determination, everyone can hope to start from scratch, climb the social ladder and succeed in the U.S. Everyone was given this opportunity, meaning that people had egual rights.

Secondly, the Invincible's trailer relates the Vincent Papale's history, a typical hero of American Dream. Vincent Papale is a 30-year-old bartender and teacher, and a fan of the Piladelphia Eagles, a football team. In the years 1970, he loses teaching job and his wife. In the years 1976, the new coach of Philadelphia Eagles decides to organize open tryouts. Vince is chosen to become a professional player. He becomes the oldest rookie. 3 decades later, in 2006, the movie « Invincible » is shot about Vince. Today, Vincent knows the country-delivers speeches about his professional career and his victory over colon cancer. We would say that V. Papale is a typical American hero because he started with nothing and made it to the top (succes story). He realized his dream/he made his dream come true through hard work and perseverance. He inspired people. Kids took him as a role model. For example, the poem « Prince of Peace » by John Dos Pasos tells of an immigrant who succeeded through hard work and perseverance. He knew how to use his talents to create an empire. He was also considered a hero because he donated all his fortune to charities and organization promoting peace.

Finally, the question about the end of American Dream is posed on 2 press articles. First, they pronounce the reasons which endanger the US. Today, the U.S economy is characterized by rising inequalities, the gap between the rich and the poor is widening like for example in the wealth distribution which is unequal. As is mentioned in the text, the « top 1 percent owns 35 percent of the total net worth ». The US economy is characterized too by social stasis, the lack of social mobility. It's today very hard to climb the social ladder in the U.S/harder than in most « civilized » countries. People who are in the lower class will « stay in the lower class ». It's very hard today for Americans to move from one class to another : class structures are more and more « rigid ». As this is what the American Dream is based on this dream is now in danger. American society has become a very « polarized » society, with wealthy people having access to the best education, the best jobs, etc. and poor people who are uneducated. Who live in single-parent families, in communities with a huge crime rate. The American Dream is a reality, but only for a few people like Elon Musk mentioned at the beginning of the document who is a man was born in South Africa but emigrated to the United States in the 1990s. He founded Paypal and SpaceX. At the age of 42, he is worth an estimated 2.4 billion dollars. People like Elon Musk really embody the American Dream. But it has become very hard for the rest of the population to climb the social ladder. Social mobility is at the basis of this dream, we can say that founding (defining myth is becoming a lie, something that doesn't exist), which is emphasized by the fact that the heroes of the American Dream are scarce.
