Hello,
All the English words ending with a lonely y have a tendency to behave that way: y becomes ie
a baby, 2 babies.
a fly, 2 flies.
a hobby, 2 hobbies.
to cry: she often cries.
to try: He tries to improve, he tried to understand.
to carry: He usually carries her bag and he carried her bag yesterday.
but if a word ends in ay, ey, oy, uy, then the y stays:
a bay, 2 bays.
a volley, 2 volleys.
a boy, 2 boys.
a guy, 2 guys.
to play: she plays, she played.
