    Do-To do-Doing/aide
    Message de vanilla06 posté le 07-12-2014 à 12:57:03 (S | E | F)
    Hello,

I'm studying English at school and I need some help.
I have an exercise with a lot of sentences and I must complete them with :
Example : "to do" "do" or "doing"
Example : It's hot in here. Would you mind ..... the window ? (I must complete it with the verb "open").
How can I know how to complete those sentences ?
Excuse me for my bad English.
    Vanilla06

    Hello vanilla06,

Tu dois savoir que certains verbes anglais sont toujours suivis de -ING (ex : dislike, enjoy, mind, can't stand...) ---> verbes d'émotions
I don't mind getting up early. (= Cela ne me dérange pas de me lever tôt)

Après tout dépend du contexte de ta phrase : Pour utiliser la forme "do" il doit être suivi d'un modal ou sous la forme d'un impératif.
Ex : I could do the same thing !

Pour le "to do" il faut que le verbe précédent soit toujours suivi de "to"
Ex : I would like TO do...
    J'espère avoir pu t'aider

    Hello,
here is a list of verbs used with the gerund: (You have probably learnt them and you are being asked to manipulate them)
    I like writing
    I enjoy swimming
    I love diving
    I adore cooking

    I don't mind waiting
Would you mind opening the window ?

I hate walking in the rain.
    I can't stand walking.....
    I can't bear walking....

I am used to helping people.

All prepositions are followed by a gerund:

    I am good at shooting.
I am fed up with waiting.

Yaya, you say: Tu dois savoir que certains verbes anglais sont toujours suivis de -ING
Yes, it is usually true if you are talking about a habit, but if you put your verb into the conditional and describe something you have never done or refuse to do, then the infinitive will be used:
I like swimming but I wouldn't like to swim in this dirty canal.
I like to teach in good conditions (an ideal, a dream , not a habit)
I love to watch a good western in the original language when I feel like it ( a choice of life)

    Thank you for your answers.
That is really helping me. Now I understand better that exercise,
It was very kind of you to take time out to explain this exercise.
    Thanks ever so much again.
