Hello dear all and new visitors

who would wish to enter 'The Dupayne Museum' and know more about its series of murders

    * Merci à Amélie Nothomb .
    ......................................
    ........... Hurlement dans la nuit noire . Thème 1 ( 3ème volet) ..................

And now , avez-vous crié ?! I hope you really like it especially for its gloomy atmosphere and sick humour ' , even if you love cats which is not my case , by the way . J'ai quand-même une pensée émue ( de loin ) pour Gros-Matou. Don't call the RSPCA !

    Dear Violet,
I enjoyed translating that text, really. It has such a great atmosphere about it, you're sucked into the story. The name of the "monster" though, is less than dreadful
Anyway, here's my try. I tried and apply translation methods I've learned through my courses but I had to look up words in my faithful online dictionary.

Normally, Tally would have started to worry about dinner or prepare a tray if she intended to watch TV. That night though, she did not feel like preparing anything. (…) What she realized in the museum was simple, but it could entail so important consequences that her amazement kept her from thinking about anything else. Seated (1), both her arms stretched in front of her, she was as motionless and stiff as a dummy waiting for a plate of imaginary food. (…)

Her heart sank all of a sudden, and she clutched the edge of the table, in terror: the silence of the night was being disrupted by a gloomy howl. She thought at first that it was human, before realizing it came from an animal. Big-Kitty! She staggered to her desk to catch her keys and ran to the door. She grabbed her flashlight on the edge of the porch and snatched the first coat she could lay her hand on- her raincoat-. The door opened easily this time, and she dashed into the darkness. The clouds were low, the night was starless and the moon crescent was barely visible. A feeble gust of wind was moving through the trees and the grass like a human being brushing her face. The howl was very close now: it came from the border of the Heath. Running down the path, she opened the wicker fence and swept through the nearby trees with her torchlight. She saw it at last.
Big-Kitty was hanging to a low stem. One of its hind legs was trapped in a belt, the other end of which was knotted to the stem. It was swinging while meowing desperately, his three remaining free legs slashing thin air in a vain attempt to free itself. She rushed instinctively to it and raised her arms, but the stem was too high, and she screamed in pain when the claws dug into the back of her hand. She felt the warmth of the blood dripping. “ ‘ll be back in a minute, I’ll be back in a minute,” she screamed, and she ran back to the cottage. She needed gloves, a living-room chair and a knife. She took one, grabbed a knife on the display and got back to the tree within seconds. The howl went on, terrible and continuous. (…).

    (1) or is it sitting... Mmmm
    Have a wonderful day,
    Pascal

Hello kazan and many thanks for daring to be the first venturing into such darkness ! Thrilling and probably threatening , indeed ! You can't keep the mysterious big cat a French name, can you ? ! Just think it doesn't understand and speak anything else but English cats' language ! Think of English speaking people pronouncing 'Gros Matou ' : it could sound [ gr mt ]( I am teasing you , friends ) ! Such a strain, too ! Tally and a 'friend ' of hers have chosen a proper name which is quite common , by the way ! Actually , PD James who seems to love cats , did !

    Bonjour Violet,
très bon choix... à en avoir des cauchemars !!

[...]In normal circonstances,Tally would have started by giving a thought to her dinner and making a tray if she intended to watch television. But tonight she did not feel like preparing anything.[...] The revelation she had in the museum was so straightforward - but could have so important consequences - that amazement prevented her from thinking about anything else.Seated, the two arms laying out in front of her, she was as stiff and motionless as a stuffed dummy waiting for an imaginery plate of food.[...]

Her heart wrung all of a sudden and she clung on to the edge of the table, in terror: the silence of the night was torn by a lugubrious howl. She first thought it was a human being before realizing it was an animal. Big-Tomcat! She staggered towards her desk to catch her keys and ran to the door. She took her torch on the porchsill and snatched the first to come coat - her raincoat-. The door opened easily this time, and she rushed out in the dark.

Clouds were low, the night was nearly starless and the crescent moon hardly visible. A light wind moved over trees and grass like a living creature, brushing her face. The howling was quite close now: it was coming from the edge of the Heath. Running down the path, she opened the wicker gate and scanned across the next trees with the beam of her torch. She at last noticed it.

Big-Tomcat was suspended from a low branch. One of its hind legs was trapped in a belt the other end of which was tied around the branch. It swung desperatly caterwauling, its three free legs scratching the air in a vain attempt to set itself free. Instinctively she rushed towards it and raised her arms but the branch was too high and she cried out in pain when the claws lacerated the back of her hand. She felt streaming the warm blood. "Coming, I'm coming", she cried running back to the cottage. She needed gloves, a chair from the living room and a knife. She took one, grabbed a knife from the display self and got back the tree in a few seconds. ' The unremittingly howling dragged on, fearsome.'[...]

    Bonjour

    Voici ma proposition.

Howl in the Black of Night

Ordinarily, Tally would have begun preparing her dinner and a tray by now if she had the intention of watching television. But this evening, she didn't feel like preparing anything. The revelation she had received at the museum was pretty ordinary, but it could have such far-reaching consequences that the excitement prevented her from thinking of anything else. Seated with her two arms stretched out in front of her, she was as motionless and rigid as a mannequin waiting for its imaginary plate of food.

Suddenly, her chest tightened and she grasped the edge of the table in terror: the silence of the night was severed by a mournful howl. At first, she believed the sound to be human before realizing that it was that of an animal. A feline! She stumbled to her desk to pick up her keys and ran towards the door. She grabbed her flashlight on the edge of the porch and snatched the first coat she came to, her raincoat. The door swung open easily, for a change, and she ventured out into the darkness.

The clouds hung low in what was essentially a starless night save a barely visible sliver of moon. A light breeze, mimicking the movements of a living creature through the trees and the grass, caressed her face. The howling was ever so near now and was coming from the edge of the Heath. Running down the footpath, she opened the wicker gate and scanned the nearby trees with the beam of her flashlight. She saw the source at last.

A feral cat was hanging from a low branch. One of its back legs was caught in a strap the other end of which was tied to the branch. It was swinging and meowing in desperation, its three other legs clawing at the air in a desperate attempt to free itself. Instinctively, she rushed toward it and raised her arms. But the branch was too high and she let out a cry when its claws dug into the back of her hand. She felt the warm blood begin to run. “I'm coming, I'm coming” she shouted, as she sprinted back to the cottage. She needed some gloves, a wooden chair and a knife. She picked up the chair, grabbing the knife from the display case, and returned to the tree in a matter of seconds. The horrible howling continued...

    Bonjour chère violet,
My God ! Here my try after the work of notrepere !

    Screaming in the dark night.
... Normally, Tally would have begun to worry of her dinner and prepare a tray if she had intention of watching television. Sitting with her two arms stretched out in front of her, she was as still and rigid as a dummy waiting for an imaginary plate of food.
Her heart jumped all of sudden and she clung to the edge of the table, terrified : the silence of the night was rent by a gloomy screaming. At first she thought it was a human being before to realize it was an animal's one .Tomcat ! She staggered as far as her desk catching her keys and ran towards the door. She took her torch on the ledge of the porch and caught the first comer coat - her raincoat. This time the door opened easily and she rushed in the darkness.
The clouds were low, the night was almost starless and the moon crescent barely visible. A soft wind was moving among the trees and the grass like a being alive touching lightly her face. She felt the warmth of her blood trickling. « I 'm coming, I'm coming » she cried and she ran back to the cottage. She needed gloves, a chair and a knife. She seized one, caught a knife on the shelf and went back to the tree within seconds. The yowl was going on, fearsome and continuous ...

    Hello Violet,

Tally would have started thinking about her dinner and prepared a tray if ever she had intended watching TV. But tonight, she did not feel like preparing anything. The revelation she had at the museum was clear but could have such important consequences that amazement prevented her from thinking of anything else. Big-tomcat was hanging from a low branch. One of its hind legs was taken in a belt the other end of whic tied to the branch. It swung and mewed desperately, its three other legs scratching the air in a vain attempt to free itself. Instinctively, she rushed towards it and raised her arms, but the branch was too high and she screamed in pain when the claws scratched her face. She felt the warmth of the dripping blood. “Coming, coming”, she shouted, and she ran back to the cottage. She needed gloves, a chair and a knife. She took one in the lounge, picked up a knife on the display and went back to the tree within some seconds. The fearsome howl went on, endlessly.
(Big-Tomcat is a stray cat, coming from the nearby heath that Tally had taken pity on and to which she usually leaves a bowl of food in her garden)

Thank you for this thrilling extract..(I suppose we'll have to buy the book to know the end of the story or shall we translate it entirely ?)

    Hello Violet and the others,
    This is my try :
    Howl in the dark

Normally, Tally would have begun to worry about her meal and prepare a tray if she had intended to watch TV. But tonight, she didn't want to prepare anything (...)
The revelation that she had had at the museum was so simple, but it could be so important that the amazement prevented her from thinking about something else.
Seated, both arms extended in front of her she was as still and rigid as a mannequin waiting for an imaginary plate of food.
Her heart sank suddenly and she clung to the edge of the table terrified : the silence of the night was broken by a mournful howl. At first, she thought it was a human before realizing that it was an animal. Gros-Matou !
She staggered to her desk to grab her keys and ran to the door. She took her flashlight on the edge of the porch and snatched the first comer coat- her raincoat.
The door opened easily this time and she rushed into the darkness.
The clouds were low, the night was almost starless and the crescent moon barely visible.
A light wind moved in the trees and the grass as a living being touching her face.
The shrieck was so near now : it came from the edge of the Heath. Running down the path, she opened the wicker fence and faintly illuminated neighboring trees with the beam of her flashlight.
    She saw it at last.
Gros-Matou hung on a low branch. One of its hind limbs was caught in a belt whose the other end was tied to the branch.
It was swinging and meowing desesperatly clawing its three legs free air in vain attempt to get away. Instinctively she rushed towards it and raised her arms but the branch was too high and she let out cry of pain when claws scratched her back hand.

The howling lasted, terrible and continious.

    Poor cat !
Thank you very much Violet !

    Hello Violet
    Here is my try!!

Long howling in the black night.
Usually, Tally would have started to think about her dinner and to get ready a tray if she intended to watch television.
But this evening, she did not feel like doing anything.
The revelation she had had to the museum was so simple, but it could have so important consequences that the astonishment prevent her from thinking about any other thing.
Seated with her two arms stretched out in front of her, she was as motionless and straight as a mannequin waiting for an imaginery food plate.
Her heart sank suddenly, and she held tight to the edge of the table, terrorized : the silence of the night was pierced by a mournful howl. She thought first that it was a human being before she realized that it was an animal. Big Tomcat ! She went stagging until her office to take her keys and rushed to the door. She took her torch on the edge of the porch and snatched the first coat available – her raincot. The door opened easily this time and she rushed into the darkness.
The cloud were low, the night was nearly starless and the crescent moon scarcely visible. A light wind blew into the trees and the grass like a human being brushing her face. The howling was getting closer now and was coming from the edge of the Heath. Running down the path, she opened the wicker gate and swept the nearby trees with the beam of her torch.
    She saw it at last.

He was swinging and meowing desperately, his three other paws scratching the air in a vain attempt to get free.
Instinctively, she rushed towards him and raised her arms, but the branch was too much high and she screamed with pain when his claws slashed the back of her hand. She felt the warmth of her blood which was flowing. »I am coming, I am coming”, she shouted and she hurry back to the cottage. She needed gloves, a chair of the living room and a knife. She took one, caught a knife from the display and went back to the tree in a few seconds. The awful howling of the poor cat still got along in the night.

    Hi Violet
As I told you, I was not very proud of my first shot. This one has very mildly been arranged.
It is just a bit better, although not as good as I would like.
But it will have to do for the moment.
    Here it is:

In a usual situation, Tally would have started to think about her dinner and to prepare herself a TV tray, had she had the intention of watching TV. But tonight, she didn’t want to prepare anything. The revelation she had had at the Museum was so simple, but could have such huge consequences that stupefaction forbade her to think about anything else. Seated, both arms resting in front of her, she was as still and rigid as a dummy waiting for an imaginary meal. Suddenly, her heart squeezed, and she grabbed the edge of the table, terrorized: the silent night was being torn by a lugubrious scream. At first, she thought it was a human being’s, before she understood it was an animal’s. Gros-Matou! She stumbled up to her study to fetch her keys and ran to the door. She took her torchlight from the porch ledge and snatched up the first coat she laid her hands on – her raincoat. The door opened easily, this time, and she rushed into darkness.
The clouds were low, the night almost starless and the moon crescent hardly visible. A feeble wind was blowing in the trees and on the grass like a living thing brushing her face. The scream was very close now: it came from the edge of the Heath. Running down the sent, she opened the willow fence and swept across the neighbouring trees with her torchlight beam. She finally caught sight of it.
Gros-Matou hanged from a low branch. One of its hind legs was caught in a belt whose other extremity was tied to the branch. It swayed, mewing desperately, its three free legs scratching the air in a vain attempt to free itself. Instinctively, she rushed towards it and raised her arms, but the branch was too high and she screamed with pain when the claws lacerated the back of her hands. She felt the warmth of blood running down her skin. “comin’ comin’” she shouted, running back to the cottage. She needed gloves, a chair from the living room and a knife. She grabbed a chair, took a knife from the shelf and ran back to the tree in a few seconds. The yell was persisting, terrible and relentless.

Thank you very much Violet. I enjoy this type of exercise, much more than I thought in fact.

    Hello violet,
    thank you for your text.
I am sorry for the late answer, i am going to give it a try.

Usually, Tally would start worryning about her diner or cooking her meal if she intented to watch the television. But this night, she didn,t feel like cooking at all. […]. The revelation she had had in the museun was such a simple one, yet it could lead to important/severe consequence and the stupefectation prevented/ impeded her to think about something else. Hi dear Violet

Normally, Tally would have begun to think about her dinner getting ready a tray, had she intended
watch television. But this night she didn't want to prepare anything.
The revelation she had at the museum was very simple, but it might bring so important consequences to make her so astonished that she couldn't think about something else.
She was sitting, her arms stretched forward; she was as still and rigid as if she were a dummy waiting for a plate of imaginary food.
Her heart sank suddenly and she clung, terrified, to the edge of the table: the silence of the night was broken by a lugubrious hurl. At first she thought it were a human being, before realizing that it was an animal. Gros Matou! She went staggering to her writing desk to grab her keys and ran to the door. She took her flashlight on the edge of the porch and snatched the first coat at hand: her raincoat. The door opened easily this time, and she rushed into the darkness.
The clouds were low, the night was almost no stars and the crescent moon barely visible. A light wind blew through the trees and in the grass, like a living being which touched her face.
The scream was closer now: it came from the hedge of the Heath. Going down the path, she opened the wicker fence and swept the neighbouring trees with the gleam of her flashlight.
She saw it last. Gros ?Matou hung on a low branch. One of its hind legs was caught in a belt, the other was tied to the branch. He swung meowing desperately clawing the air with its three free legs,
attempting in vain to free himself and get away.
She rush towards it instinctively and raised her arms, but the branch was too high and she let out a cry of pain when the claws scratched the back of her hand. She felt the warmth of spurting blood. ?I'm coming, I'm coming? she cried, and went back running to the cottage.
There she had gloves, a lounge chairs and knifes. She took one, grabbed a knife and returned to the wood in a few seconds. The howling was going on terrible and continuous?..

Thank you so much .See you.

    Dear Violet,
    Howl in the black night

In normal circumstances, Tally would have started to be concerned about her dinner and prepare a meal tray if she had meant to watch at the television. But this evening she didn't want to prepare anything. The reveal that she had have in the museum was so simple but she could have so important results that the amazement stopped to think about something else Seated, her two arms spread in front of her she was so motionless and strict than a model waiting for a dish of fictitious food. Suddenly her heart sinked and terrorized she hang on the edge of the table. The silence of the night was broken by a dismal scream. At first she thought that it was a human being before understanding that it was a question of an animal "Gros Matou" ("Big Cat"). She staggered until her office to catch her keys and rushed towards the door. She caught her torch on he edge of the porch and pulled out the anyone coat - her raincoat - The door opened easily at this time and she rushed through the darkness. The clouds were low, the night was almost without stars and the crescent of the moon scarcely visible. A light wind moved through the trees and the grass as a human being touched lightly the face. The howl was very close to actually it come from the edge of the Heath. Climbing down the footpath running she opened the osier gate and swept the neighbouring trees with the beam of her torch. At last she saw him. "Gros Matou" ("Big Cat") was hung up a low branch. One of his back paws was held back in a belt of which the other end was tied to the branch. He swang miaowing desperately, his three free paws scratching the air in a useless try to pull out. Dumbly she threw towards him and help up her arms but the branch was too high and she screamed when the claws furrowed the back of her hand. She felt the heat of the blood which flew . "I come, I come" she screamed and she returned to the cottage running. She needed gloves, a chair of the living room and a knife on the display and get back the tree in some secunds. The howl continued, fantastic and continuous.

Bonjour dear all and to the brave new comers ,

There I am , after questioning myself about what cats in distress can do or not do, how they express themselves and what PD James imagines for Tally's habits, gestures and furniture ! Thank you very much indeed for working hard here !
--This is my suggestion for part III .

    ------------ -------------

.. Howling in the darkness of night

On a usual evening ( Had that day been ordinary ) , Tally would have now set herself to get her dinner ready and prepare a TV tray if she had felt like watching ( intended to watch) some programme . But tonight ( that night ) , she did not fancy anything to eat whatsoever ( at all ) . [...] The realization ( flash) she had had at the museum was clear ( obvious) , yet , it could bring out ( disclose) such significant implications that her mind was nothing but bewilderment for now . She was sitting with her arms stretched out over the table , as still and stiff as a dummy waiting for an imaginary plate of food . [...]
All of a sudden her heart sank ( missed, skipped a beat) and she grabbed ( clutched ) the edge of the table in terror . The silence of the night was shattered by a mournful( lugubrious) howl . At first , she thought it was a human being before understanding it was an animal . Tomcat ! She staggered and got her keys ( fetched) on her desk , then hurried ( ran) to the door . She grabbed ( picked up ) her torchlight ( UK , flashlight US ) on the ledge of the porch and snatched the first coat she could find ( at hand) -her raincoat ( mackintosh ) . The door opened easily that time and she rushed into the darkness .
The clouds hung low , the night( sky ) was almost starless and the crescent moon hardly visible . A soft wind was moving among the trees and over the grass like a living creature brushing ( touching ) her face . The howl sounded closer and closer now : it came from the outer edge ( outskirts) of the Heath . She ran down the path and opened the wicker wicket (gate) and swept the nearby trees with the beams of her torch . At last , she saw him .
Tomcat was hanging from a low branch . It was trapped with one of his hind paw fastened in a belt the other end of which was tied to the branch . He was swinging and yowling in despair and his three other legs clawed at the air in a helpless ( inefficient ) attempt to get free ( escape) .( at getting free) . Instinctively, she rushed to him and raised her arms , but the branch was too high . She screamed with pain as the feline's claws gashed ( scratched, lacerated ) the back of her hand . She then felt her warm blood trickle. ' I'll be back in a minute ! Back in a minute ' , she cried out and she raced back to the cottage . She needed a pair of gloves , a sturdy chair and a knife . She took a chair in the sitting-room , caught ( seized) a carving knife on the display shelf and was back under the tree within a few seconds .[ ...] Unbroken and atrocious , the howling went ( was going) on and on ...[...]

By the writer herself to start with , or finish with !........................ . .

Normally , Tally would be thinking now of what to have for her early supper , setting a tray if she planned to eat while watching television .[...] But tonight she was still unable to summon up any interest in even the simplest preparation. [...] The revelation that had come to her at the museum was so simple but so extraordinary in its implication that she had thoughts for nothing but astonishment at the discovery .[ ...] Sitting at the table , her two arms stretched out on the surface , she was as still and rigid as a dummy placed there ready to receive some imaginary plate of food . [...]
And then her heart leapt and she clutched the edge of the table in terror . The air was rent by an unearthly screaming . At first she thought it was human, then realized that this screech of agony came from the throat of an animal . It was Tomcat ! She lurched over to the bureau for her door keys and made for the door . She reached for the torch from the ledge of the porch and seized the nearest coat - her mackintosh -from its peg . The door opened easily this time and she ran into the darkness .
It was a night of low cloud , almost starless only a glimpse of the sickle moon . There was a low wind . It moved among the trees and grass like a living thing and touched her face ( with its clammy hands ) . The shrieking was closer now ; it came from the edge of the Heath . Running down the path , she pushed open the wicker gate and swept the torch in an arc over the nearest trees . At last she found him .
Tomcat was hanging from one of the low branches , a belt slung round one hind leg with the other end tied to the branch . He was swinging as he screamed, his three unfettered paws ineffectually scrabbling at the air . Instinctively , she ran and reached up, but the branch was too high and she gave a cry of pain as his claws slashed at the back of her hand and she felt the warm trickle of blood . She said ' I'm coming , I'm coming ' , and ran back into the cottage . She needed gloves, a chair and a knife . She seized one in the sitting -room , took a carving knife from the knife-block and within seconds was again under the tree . [ ...] (The screaming went on , dreadful and never-ending until ....)

    Hello dear all ,

Ces méchantes petites particules ... postpositions ( to reach up) ou prépositions ( to make for) qui changent tout !..

    ......I - Conjugaisons -----)

Encore l'os des verbes irréguliers ...c'est, ( must be , 'muss es ein, es muss ein' cf Beethoven and Léo Ferré Lien internet
)3'38 et ce sera toujours incontournable
    , like music !

a ) Moult simple pasts : she planned, intended, stretched [ ' strt], clutched , grabbed, realized, lurched, staggered, hurried to , pushed open , scratched , smashed , gashed, screamed , shrieked, needed ['ndd] , reached['rt] , seized [ szd]...and so on...
- had , thought, leapt, sank( to sink, sank, sunk) , made for , ran, came , swept ( to sweep), gave , said, went ...

    * des participes passés irréguliers aussi (passive ) - was rent ( to rend , rent , rent ) , torn ( to tear, tore , torn ) , a belt ( had been) slung ( to sling , slung , slung ) . / ou réguliers : was trapped, fastened [ ' fsnd] , tied to ...

c ) des past continuous = was ou were BV-ing : la description appuyée ( genre flash back , comme au ralenti slow motion) , la valeur durative :
she was sitting, Tomcat was hanging ( to hang , hung , hung ) , was swinging , was screaming , was yowling , was meowing, (was going on ).

d ) present and past conditionals : Would + infinitif sans to > would** be thinking ( continuous infinitive) / antériorisé ( concordance ) would have + past participle : would have started , would have had (p.p) , would have thought , would have set , would have prepared ( if it had been a usual day ) ...

e ) des past perfects : revelation that had come ( chez l'auteure) , had had , had been, had felt .
des subjonctifs non périphrastiques avec sujets inversés : had that day been , had she had the intention of ...: style tenu pour l'interrogation fictive , l'hypothétique > Eussè-je dîné , y eût-il eu moins de répétitions ( conditionnel 2 ème forme , peu usité ) , je me serais moins ennuyée ...

f ) un continuous present qui tend vers l'aspect futur : je viens , j'arrive , je vais revenir : I am coming et m'a fait aller vers le simple future : le résultat rassurant qui compte ( question de point de vue de narration) = I will be back = I'll be back = je n'en ai que pour quelques secondes , je serai là pour toi .

g ) des gérondifs après - conjonction 'tout en ' : while watching ou après - préposition before understanding , at getting free ...

h ) des gérondifs à valeur de noms = nominalisations : the bowling , rhe screaming , the shrieking [ 'rk].

    i ) Des present participles descriptifs : setting a tray/ Sitting ( valeur adjectivale = p.passé > seated [' stid] ) ,waiting for , brushing , touching her face, scrabbling at , et autres adjectifs verbaux : a carving knife ( j'avais mis la photo ) , a living thing , a living creature [ 'kr ] .

j ) Auxiliaire modal de l'incapacité particulière ( she could summon up .....nothing but = she could not summon up anything but ) : she was unable to summon up / de la possibilité : it could bring out / de la capacité : any coat she could find .

**k ) ) Normally ( now , at that time of day ) = fréquence = would be thinking : elle penserait ou elle pensait , se concentrait sur ce que ...si tous les 'soirs ' , elle 'soupe ' ou dîne à la même heure , auquel cas ce would est un fréquentatif . On a assez d'indicateurs

    II ) Grammar :

a ) La proposition infinitive que l'on pouvait faire dans cet extrait : verbes de perception : feel , smell, see, hear ( it does not work that way with taste ) + cod + infinitif sans to , si juste un constat .
She felt her warm blood trickle .
' She felt the warm trickle of blood ', PD James dixit .
    .
The sentence which/that you are thinking of was quite difficult to translate , wasn't it ?

    b ) Les comparatifs et superlatifs :

--- comparatif d'égalité ( très facile ! Ne pas confondre avec celui de supériorité ou infériorité -simpler , stiffer , darker...than - more dreadful than / less ...than ) - as still and rigid as : 2 fois la même conjonction = .
J'ai bien aimé procéder à une allitération bien combinable à l'oreille : as still as stiff en affaiblissant le 2 ème 'as' .oOoO [z'stillz'stiff] : I should put them one by one , but I prefer it like that pour mieux faire comprendre combien l'anglais s'enfile bien, si l'on a quelques astuces ! Is it more visible ? non stop , you see .( just for you to pronounce it like one long word ) . As still comme dans 'keep still ! ' : ne bougez plus !
.. 'As still and rigid as ' [ riid]. PDJ chose with a touch of French ( Latin ) , some of you and I ( sujet ) preferred an anglo-saxon one .
-- comparatif de supériorité : the sound was closer ['kls] ( comme un magazine , paraît -il ) . Choisir un comparatif redoublé nous a paru ( à 2 ou 3 ) accentuer le suspense : closer and closer , puisque Tally était encore en mouvement .( # more and more distant)

-- 2 superlatifs( de supériorité) d'adjectifs courts the -est ...in the recipe Ooo [ 'rsipi ] book : the simplest preparation , the nearest trees . Prononcer -[ist].

A glimpse of the sickle moon : on apercevait à peine le croissant (faucille, ici) de lune = the crescent moon. Suivant les régions ,' se prononce 'crescent'['krsnt]soit plus rarement [krnt]; not to confuse with French croissant , prononcé 'kwroassant'. a question child : why is the crescent sometimes lit on the bottom of the moon ? It depends where you are, my child and it is a question of orbit ..( pour Nina )Lien internet

................ ........................ Bath Royal Crescent .Splendid architecture in such a lovely part of England .Oh! Dear! If I were alone...

17 ) This is a sling ... et non , une fronde.

Et l'accessoire 'tied' to a low branch.

Scratch, gash, slash , furrow (me semblait sillonner la terre), dig -ça creuse fort!-well..take your pick ! I am not playing !

= to be hot-blooded.

    22 ) The knife-block ? The knife-case? The knife-shelf ? The knife -rack ? Au choix...

    23 ) Within a few seconds

24 ) The screaming , howling, yelling ..still on ...and so on and so forth.

Thanks notrepère for your return here . Reading a native speaker always brings a little extra thing or an extra little thing .

    Bonjour
Merci Violet pour cet exercice.  I agree that "something was lost in translation" in several cases which made an accurate translation impossible.

    Hello ,
Lovely of you to offer me such a cute kitten swinging in the air to get dry, mamou !
Wow, '´Lost in translation ' thank you notrepere, for recalling this good film by Sofia Coppola ( 2003 already).
