    Bac/ Espaces et échanges

    Bonjour,
je passe mon bac d'anglais dans deux jours. Voilà le texte que j'ai appris, pouvez-vous le corriger afin qu'il devienne parfait s'il vous plait ?

In order to start my presentation about space and exchanges, I will introduce these two notions. This notion deals with the geographical and symbolic areas that all societies occupy and the interactions between men and different societies. Our world is built on the exploration and conquest of new spaces. An exchange is when we give in return for something received. Trade, emigration, wars and disasters have influenced the world as we know it today. These different cultural, economic, sociological and language interactions have transformed and characterized our modern-day world – sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. What could drive people to leave their native land to go in a new country? Firstly we will talk about the good aspect of immigration. Finally, we will see that immigration have negative point.

At first, since to 19 century start immigration. The population goes to America to filed dictator and escape persecution. The united states represent a nation of liberty and diversity. The first document I have chosen is a poster for a compaign to incite immigration. The title is ‘’Immigration make America’’. We saw many immigrant who’s swaring. This poster presents America like a nation of families, of freedom and of diversity. This is a representation of the America dream. The American dream is thenotion that the American social, economic, and political system makes success possible for every person. It is an interesting illustration of the notion of spaces and exchanges as it shows the motivation of population who quit his country to arrive in a new land, with dreams and hope of a better life. But

Secondly, many people criticize the idea of the American dream because they say that it is impossible for everyone to be able to fulfill their dreams. Indeed, there are still inequalities in class, race, religion and ethnicity preventing people from ‘’living the dream’’. It’s the message of the second document that we saw in class : a extract of West Side Story, a musical with a two group fighting in the 30s years (=dans les annees 30): Puerto Ricans and American. In the lyrics, we can noticed that there is an opposition between two groups : the girls who love New-York and the boys who love Puerto Rica. In West Side Story, Puerto Rican change of country to come in USA and we saw that the exchange between them and American is difficult. In 1917, all Porto Ricans obtened the American nationality. But this agreement didn’t work out a social exchange between the peoples. The girls want to live in New-York, because they believe in the American Dream. They are descrided as metarialistic. Boys don’t want to live in New-York but in Porto Rica. They need job and they are confronted with the real life whereas girls stay at home. The boys talked about the discriminations against them because they whey are different with them accent and skin colors. The link between this document and the notion is that we have 2 different country with 2 different cultures. Puerto Ricans coming to Amercia to search a better life. But immigrations result also on racism and boys don’t feel at home in America. The exchanges between Puerto Ricans and Americans become impossible.

Thirdly, during many centuries, European powers multiply colonies. Today, these colonies have some problems of develepement and the populations are poor. What’s while this poor population decided to going in their last colonizer. There is a reason of immigration. And for racism too. It’s what we can see in the third text, an extract from a book titled ‘’An independent women’’ written by Morag Prunty. Bridie, the main character, is a English woman. She has a blind-date with Pat. She has never saw Pat, just talk with him in phone.
They didn’t know each other, they just talked on phone to describe how they would dress to recognized each other for their first date. It’s a blind date. The story takes place in England and the place of the appointement is in a bar in London. Bridie imagined the perfect man according to the descritption that Pat made of him on the phone. For Bridie, the appareances is very important. She imagined an Irish surgeon and a complete life with him as his wife. So, she wants to show herself perfect. She has never imagined that Pat would be an Indian. When he came to her in the bar to introduce himself, Bridie thought, that ‘’maybe he was a stalker or a pervert’’. So we can noticed that she is full of prejudices and stereotyps. Many details of this story refers to the ‘’Space and exchange’’ notion. At first, the bar is a public space where people can make exchange. The phone at the beginning of the story is a way of exchanges. The opposition between 2 geographical spaces : England and India. They can’t exchange because of Pat’s origins, the space is limited according to origins. Some people show an opening to the world and some others don’t, just like Bridie. Bridie’s racism and prejudices doesn’t allow exchanges between her and Pat.

To conclude, I wonder if the lives of immigrants in another country are really better than the ones they might have in their country of origin since they earn too little money to live in good conditions. Indeed it is harder for them to integrate and they face discrimination because they don’t share a common culture with the adoptive country.
