    Why use As/help
    Message from university1984 posted on 16-09-2013 at 09:04:23 (D | E | F)
    Hello,

    Could you help me please?

There was heavy snow like as in the previous year according to my friends.
    Why should we use "as“?
    Thank you for your answers.

    Hello,
In this sentence the comparative word is like. As is used to make a reference to a specific snowy period in that previous year.
    Hope it helps

    Hello,

The snow was as heavy as it was last year (comparative)
It snowed as heavily as it snowed last year ,it snowed as it did last year .
In correct English ,you do not write "it snowed like last year" (even though you hear it all the time ,especially in the USA !)
because "like" introduces a noun or a pronoun .
Ex :you talk about the weather like a meteorologist/like him /like her/.
    I hope it helps !

    Hello,
There was heavy snow like / as in the previous year according to my friends. I suppose you have to choose, like and as can't both be in the sentence.

like (preposition) is followed by a noun, as (conjunction) is followed by a sentence (subject + verb)

It snowed a lot like last year.(not very elegant)
It snowed a lot as it did last year.
There was heavy snow as (there was)in the previous year, according to my friends.
I worked during the summer holidays just as I had done last year.
