Hello,
The meaning of Sit is just being seated somewhere doing something or just to sit lazily. I think it's really hard to explain the meaning of Sit.
The meaning of Hangout is "to spend time with some people in some specific locations". When you are with your friends and having fun it is generally said as hanging out with friends.

Hello,
normally, you hang a shirt on a line for it to dry.
When you "hang out with friends", you meet them outside and loiter around with them, you chat, play, do what you like.... It is not a very high level of language, it just means "to while away the time, lazily or not, with friends".
to sit means to sit...
Stand up ! Sit down ! are the first verbs pupils learn....
I am sitting is a position.
I am sitting down is a movement.
You can also sit for an exam.....
