A- an/ how to choose

Hello,
Please help!
Why is it "a" uniform not "an" uniform?
I am taught at school that it should be "an" in front of a word beginning with a vowell such as "a\e\i\o\u".
Thanks a lot!

Hello,
That is because the combining of words here is guided by the consonant sound ("yu" sound) that begins the word and not by the spelling.
