    Message from san99 posted on 20-06-2012 at 02:53:13 (D | E | F)
    Hello,
I am writing sentences using two words fewer or less. Could you please check these sentences and highlight the errors?
Thank you for being very helpful to me.

There are less cars on the road. or There are fewer cards on the road as compared to yesterday.
He was spending less time in correcting his mistakes.
I ought to drink less beer otherwise I won't be able to drive.
There were fewer students in the class than yesterday.
Fewer apples grew on this tree than last spring.
I have visited only fewer cities of the United States than you have.
I have bought fewer chocolates than you.
I have collected fewer DVDs than last time.
I drank less lemonade this month.
There are a few grammatical mistakes in this content.
There are fewer intelligent players in the Rock Studio team these days.
I have less money to spend on the shoes.
I am getting older now, I am not taking strong exercises. Now, I take fewer walks than before.
Why have I got less ice cream than my sister?
Why have i got fewer ice creams than my sister?
There are fewer trains going to Chicago these days.
My dentist told me that I should eat fewer chocolates.
You should eat less vanilla custard.
This dress can be work on fewer occasions only.
Please mix less salt in the curry, measure the salt with small table spoon.
I like this pizza, there is a less chilly in it now.
I bought fewer cakes from the shop than last month.
He seems to have less time to do the work.

    Hello,

I have found these mistakes (in my opinion), I have highlighted them, but perhaps I have forgotten others errors or I am wrong. So, let us wait for the other corrections.

There are less cars on the road. or There are fewer cards on the road as compared to yesterday (why didn't you say "than yesterday"?).
He was spending less time in correcting his mistakes.
I ought to drink less beer otherwise I won't be able to drive.
There were fewer students in the class than yesterday.
Fewer apples grew on this tree than last spring (are you sure about the preterit?).
I have visited only fewer cities of the United States than you have (only = ?).
I have bought fewer chocolates than you (but less chocolate).
I have collected fewer DVDs than last time.
I drank less lemonade this month (what about the present perfect instead of the preterit?).
There are a few grammatical mistakes in this content.
There are fewer intelligent players in the Rock Studio team these days.
I have less money to spend on the shoes.
I am getting older now, I am not taking strong exercises. Now, I take fewer walks than before (take walks?).
Why have I got less ice cream than my sister?
Why have i got fewer ice creams than my sister?
There are fewer trains going to Chicago these days.
My dentist told me that I should eat fewer chocolates (but less chocolate)
You should eat less vanilla custard.
This dress can be work on fewer occasions only.
Please mix less salt in the curry, measure the salt with small table spoon.
I like this pizza, there is a less chilly in it now.
I bought fewer cakes from the shop than last month.
He seems to have less time to do the work.

    Remember: uncountable - > less, countable - > fewer.

    Regards.

    Hello,

There are less cars on the road. or There are fewer cards cars on the road as compared to yesterday (why didn't you say "than yesterday"?).
You can't use 'than' because you didn't use the comparative for the word 'compare'.
    You compare x to y
    You compare x with y
    Maybe I'd say:
There are fewer cars on the road today, compared with yesterday.

    Hello lucile83,

I am sorry, I meant why didn't you say "than yesterday", but without "as compared".

    Regards.

Thanks Lucile83, and Bernard02 for posting your comments.

There are fewer cars on the road today than yesterday. Is it ok? An alternate: There are comparatively fewer cars on the road today than that of yesterday.
Time is countable, like two minutes, three seconds, one hour... why can't we use less with time then.
I used fewer with the chocolates because the chocolates bars are countable. For instance, Bernard bought two bars of white chocolate.
Please use less chocolate in the cake. I think we can use less because the amount of chocolate is uncountable here.

Here are the sentences I rewrote after getting your feedback:
I am taking less lemonade than before.
There were fewer apples in the fridge, you could make a shake out of them.
I have visited fewer states of the United States.

    What is preterit?

    Hello bernard,

    It would sound strange anyway.
There are fewer cars on the road today than yesterday...... that doesn't make sense to me.

Now we could let san99 work on her subject, couldn't we?

    Re: Fewer / Less from san99, posted on 20-06-2012 at 17:58:03 (D | E)
    Welcome again Gerondif.

I could visit fewer cities of the United States during my trip. Is this correct now?
I attended fewer events this month than the last month.
I like this pizza, there is less peperoni in it now.

    One question:
As fewer is used in the sentences where comparison is made, or one thing is being compared with the other one. Is it possible to use it in the sentences without than??? Any example.

    Re: Fewer / Less from san99, posted on 20-06-2012 at 18:03:50 (D | E)
    Hello Lucile83,

I am already working on it and trying to correct my sentences.
"Now we could let san99 work on his subject, couldn't we?" said Lucile83.
Well, you misaligned my gender in the comment I am a female my dear.

Sorry for that! I have just corrected it but you have noticed my error.
I did not check if you were a male or a female, though we have talked a lot!
    Will you forgive me?

    Hello,

I could visit fewer cities of the United States during my trip this time.
I attended fewer events this month than the last month.
I like this pizza, there is less peperoni/chili/ in it now.

Fewer can be used without the end of the comparison.
I drink less beer nowadays. I drink fewer beers these days.
I have fewer occasions to have a good laugh.

    see also.
I have fewer and fewer friends.

    To Lucile83,
It's ok. Now you have known that I am a girl you won't repeat the same mistake

    Re: Fewer / Less from san99, posted on 20-06-2012 at 18:21:45 (D | E)
Thanks Gerondif. My concepts about the fewer and less are getting clearer now.
I wish If I could meet you in person and learn something.

I have fewer teachers on this forum to learn lessons from.
Now I have fewer friends whom I can trust on.
I ate less pizza last night. I ate fewer pizzas this month.
I am smoking less now. I smoked fewer cigarettes at the party.
I am trying to find "Fewer and Fewer" in Google. Could you please share any resource with me.

    Hello,

Now you have known that I am a girl you won't repeat the same mistake.
Now you know / now you have found out/ it sounds bizarre in the present perfect.

I have a civilisation question for you, since we are talking with a Pakistanese girl !

When I teach my pupils about adjectives like: fat/plump/slim/, I explain that plump is a friendly adjective (we have plenty of translations for it as we love to eat too and have many ways of expressing that somebody is too big without saying it too bluntly) whereas fat isn't.
I tell them that in the Indian culture, a husband is considered to have a good wife if he gets a little plump, it means his wife takes good care of him, that it is a happy marriage. Is it true or am I using a "cliché", a ready made chauvinist idea ? I know India isn't Pakistan but maybe you know about this ?

    P.S.
You learn much more from me through your screen than if you met me in person. I would be much less patient with you, as I am with my pupils.

    Re: Fewer / Less from san99, posted on 20-06-2012 at 18:27:05 (D | E)
    Is is also correct?
Fewer than 90 people attended the show in Las Vegas this summer.
Fewer and fewer people take interest in rectifying their grammar mistakes.

    Re: Fewer / Less from gerondif, posted on 20-06-2012 at 18:37:45 (D | E)
    Yes, it looks good!

Mind you , I often read less instead of fewer in detective novels, "He has less friends" is not so uncommon and if it became right, it wouldn't be a problem.

Less than half of the population voted.
Less than fifty per cent of the population voted.
    then if I read:
Less than 90 people voted, I might not see the mistake. But I will get the meaning.

    Re: Fewer / Less from san99, posted on 20-06-2012 at 19:05:26 (D | E)
    Thanks. I got your point.
First of all, we don't think of any Pakistani Girl as a Pakistenese girl.. For example, a Pakistani girl is completely different in texture, complexion, and facial feature than a Chinese girl.
I am glad that you asked a question which I don't have answer forI don't know anything about the Indian culture, but in our culture, a wife with beautiful eyes, chubby figure, and slant waist is considered as a royal model provided that she also knows how to cook good food, take care of children, and love the entire family of her husband.

Note: I was about to edit my sentence in which I wrote " I have known", but before I could do that you caught my mistake. It's ok. You are right, I can learn more from you through the virtual door " The internet", but I am curious to see you... Sorry for being straight. I do respect you, but you are very quick in answering the questions and correcting all the mistakes that I make.. Truly speaking, you are a really different teacher: a pearl in the oyster. And I will tell you why. There are so many other native English speakers, I felt at some point they really feel it a waste of time to contribute in the discussion and correct someone's mistake even if they teach grammar in High school or university. I am really happy to have found this forum where I got a chance to meet real teachers like you, Lucile83, and notrepere
Thanks to all for working hard. I know it's just not easy to be active on a forum in this age of hustle and bustle.
