Mr. Minoie's sucess contrasts with the experiences of a string of big Western restaurant chains that have failed here. Applebee's, Outback Steakhouse and California Pizza Kitchen, for example, have found that brand recognition and experience in other markets can get lost in translation in China.

Hi,
You could say' have woken up to the fact that.........would be lost in the translation process in China'. You have changed the meaning a little. If you use the expression 'woken up to the fact that' it suggests that they have eventually discovered the fact. In the original there is no idea of 'eventually' or 'in the end', although it could be implied from the context.
