Good luck again..et à vos plumes d'oie, encre noire ..! Shush!...

Correction prévue le vendredi 8 février.

    Bonjour Violet91.

The die is cast. It's in the bag.

The perfect secretary, whose light flowery cotton dress was fastened by pearl buttons and a small starched Claudine collar, was typing an insurance contract for a rich customer. She could hear, from the other side of the partition, Mr. Harry, the boss of the agency, chatting noisily with two vulgar men who had not refrained from bothering her,a short while ago, with their uncalled-for allusions.
Harry had a funny way of moving, unpredictable. He was always here when you didn't expect him. In an instant, the quietness came back, he stood close to her, cheerful:
    - « Here are 40.000 dollars, my girl! The deal of the day! Please, could you deposit them at the bank on my behalf, when you go out, all right?.. And do not vanish with them ! » He teased.
Insidiously, the idea crossed her mind. She held, at that moment, the key of Sam's happiness, as well as hers!
Living together! Love for ever! A new world!
She wrapped this huge sum into two sheets of the daily newspaper and slid the whole to the bottom of her shoulder-bag ,made heavy henceforth. It took her less time than she would have believed to leave everything.
This hilarious man, these places, this cursed city, would not see her again any more! She was already on the motorway of fortune, when " the shadow of a doubt " wormed its way into her. She felt blushing. Her heart was pounding. Beads of sweat stood out on her forehead.
What a scorching summer day ! she thought. The scarf on her head which hid her fairness and her dark glasses could make her pass unnoticed. Marion, who was all worked up, chose to leave her state for Texas, where her lover, who had been informed, would join her.
Was it possible that one could change,so fast, from a small lamb to a "black sheep"? In a blink of an eye? No! No! It was not so simple!

Nevertheless, for Sam, for her love, Marion kept moving forward... The devil take these cumbersome scruples !

    hello dear violet,

The die is cast and it's in the bag.

The perfect secretary whose clear and flowered cotton dress, done up by pearly buttons and a small starched Peter Pan collar was busy typing an insurance contract for a rich client. On the other side of the partition, she heard Mr. Harry, the agency manager, chatting loudly with two coarse men who didn't fail to bother her a moment ago with their uncalled-for comments. Harry had a funny unpredictable way of moving around. He was always where he was not expected!.. In a while, it was quiet again, he came by her and said cheerfully :"Here are 40.000 $, sweetie ! The deal of the day ! Thanks for depositing them in the bank when you leave, ok !..But don't run away with them !" he teased her.
Slyly, the idea welled up. She held the key for Sam's happiness and hers as well. A new world ! Life together ! Love forever !
She wrapped up the huge amount of money into two sheets of the daily paper and slided the whole at the bottom of her shoulder bag, heavy now. She needed less time she would have imagined to give up everything.
That scoffing man, those places, that cursed town, would never see her again !She was already on the motorway to fortune when the 'shadow of a doubt' crept over her. She felt she was blushing. Her heart was pounding. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead. The summer was becoming stifling, she thought. The scarf on her head meant to hide her fairness and her dark glasses could make her go unnoticed. Marion who was in a terrible state chose to leave her own state for Texas where her informed lover would join her. Could it be possible to turn so quickly from a 'stainless lamb' into a 'black sheep' in a flash !No ! that was not as simple as that ! And yet to save her love, Marion was moving forward.. Hell with those thorny scruples !

thank you violet quickly the rest !!

Hello Violet, this is my translation:

The die is cast, it's in the bag !
The model secretary, wearing a fresh flowery cotton dress with a starched round collar and mother-of-pearl buttons, was busy typing an insurance policy for a rich client. She was listening to the boss of the agency, Mr Harry, talking loudly on the other side of the partition to two rough men, who earlier on had annoyed her with their uncalled-for insinuations. Harry moved in a strange unpredictable way. He was always where he was not expected. When everything had calmed down, he went up to her and said breezily " Here are 40.000 dollars, my beauty ! The deal of the day ! Please deposit them in the bank for me, when you leave, alright ? And don't disappear with them! he said jokingly...
Stealthily, the idea began to grow. She had it there, the key to Sam's happiness and to hers too. A new world, life together, love forever...
She wrapped the huge amount in two pages of that day's newspaper and slid everything to the bottom of her beggar's bag, making it heavier. She needed less time than she could have imagined, to leave everything.
This man and his coarse humour,...this place,... this damned town...would never see her again ! She was already on the motorway of her fortune, when the "shadow of a doubt" cropped up. She felt herself blush. Her heart was beating wildly. Pearls of perspiration poured onto her forehead. The summer is sweltering, she thought. With her scarf on her head hiding her blonde hair, and with dark glasses, she could pass unnoticed.
Marion, in her state of confusion, decided to leave for another state... Texas, where her lover, once he knew, would join her.
Could it be possible to change so quickly from a little lamb into a black sheep ? In a flash ? No, No, It was not so easy !
Yet Marion carried on, for Sam, for his love... To the devil with old-fashioned morals !...

    Thank you Violet !
What happens in the next episode ?
    See you soon !

    Dear Violet,
The dice are thrown (or " alea jacta est ") and the business " in the bag ".
The perfect secretary whose clear and flowery cotton dress was closed by nacreous buttons and a small starched
" Peter Pan collar " was occupied in typing an insurance contract for a rich client. She heard, on the other side of the partition, Mr. HARRY, the boss of the agency, chatting loudly with two vulgar men who had not failed to bother her a moment ago with their uncalled-for words. Harry had a funny unpredictable way of moving. He was always where was not expected !... In an instant, the quietness came back, he was by her, cheerful : " Here are 40,000 dollars my sweetie pie ! The business of the day ! A lot of thanks for deposing them for me in the bank when you leave, ok ? And do not run away with them ! he teased her.
Insidiously, the idea grew up. She held the key for Sam's happiness and as well as hers.
A new world ! Life together ! Love forever !
She wrapped up the huge sum into two sheets of the daily newspaper and slided the whole at the bottom of her shoulder bag, heavy now.She needed less time she would have imagined to give up everything.
That joyful man, these places, that damned town, would never see her again. She was already on the motorway to fortune when " the shadow of a doubt " penetrated over her. She left she was blushing. Her heart was pounding. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead. The summer was becoming stifling, she thought. Her scarf on her head meant to hide her fairness and her dark glasses could make her pass unnoticed. Marion, in her states (or States !) chose to leave her own State for Texas where her informed lover would join her.
Could it be possible to turn so quickly from gentle as a lamb into a " black sheep " ? In the twinkling of an eye ? No ! No ! It was not so simple !
Nevertheless, for Sam, for her lover, Marion was moving.... The devil take these inhibiting scruples !

Thank you Violet.
    See you soon Dear Violet.

    Here's my suggestion.

The dice have been rolled and the thing's in the bag !

The perfect secretary whose fresh flowery cotton dress was fastened by pearly buttons and a small starched "claudine" collar was busy typing up an insurance contract for a wealthy customer. She heard from the other part of the wall, Mr. Harry, the company's boss, loudly talking with two rude men who hadn't missed the chance to annoy her before with their unappropiate allusions.
Harry had a funny way of moving around, impredictable. He was always there when no one expected him ! ... The silence came back after just a moment, he was next to her, happy - "here are $40,000, girl ! The bargain of the day ! I'd thank you very much if you could put them into the bank for me when you leave ok? ... and don't get away with them !" he said, teasing her.
Unexpectedly, the idea rose in her mind. She was holding the key to Sam's happiness as well as hers !
A new world ! Life together and love forever !

She wrapped up the huge amount of money in two pages of the daily paper and slided the whole down into her beggar's bag (? ) that was now heavier. It took her less time than she had thought to leave everything.
Those jovial men, those places, that damn city ... would never see her again ! Driving on the highway, she was on the road to the wealth when a sudden doubt ran across her mind. She felt she was blushing. Her heart was pounding. Her forehead was drenched with sweat. The air was sultry, she thought. Her scarf on her head to hide away her blondness and her sunglasses could make her pass unnoticed. Marion, all worked up, decides to leave... hers... to go to Texas where her warned known-by-no-one lover would join her. Was it possible for someone to change their life so drastically in just a blink of an eye ? No, no! It was impossible !

However, for Sam, for her lover, Marion was moving forward... The hell with these bulky scruples !

Thanks a lot for this exercise !

The die is cast. It’s in the bag.

Neatly togged up in her cotton dress fastened with pearly buttons and trimmed with paisleys and a starched schoolgirl collar, the model secretary was busy typewriting an insurance policy for a wealthy client. From beyond the partition she was hearing Mr. Harry, the agency’s boss, loudly uttering with two boorish men who earlier hadn’t fail to bother her with shocking innuendos.
Harry used to move around with uncanny manners, unpredictable he was. He used to be just there where he wasn’t expected to be! … In a short while, things calmed down yet, he was by her side, cheerfully dropping : "Here you are, 40.000 bucks, my dear! The deal of the day! Be so kind as to deposit it in the bank on my behalf when leaving, Okay?" He added teasing "Don’t run away with it, hey!"

A rising tide was hatching an idea. She had got hold of the key to Sam’s true happiness and to her own at the same time.
A new world was opening before both of them! Living together! Love forever and ever!

She wrapped up the huge sum into a couple of newspaper sheets and slipped it deep into her carryall that got from then on heavier. It took her less time than she ought ever have thought to drop everything. That beaming man, those premises, that damned town would never see her back! She was picturing herself yet riding high on the path to luck, when the shadow of a doubt crept on. She felt blushing. Her heart got pounding wildly. Beads of sweat spangled her forehead. "It’s stifling summer", she thought to herself. In her headscarf supposed to hide her fairness, in her dark glasses, she could definitely go unnoticed.
All fired up, Marion decided to leave her State and move to Texas where her lover, duly posted, would meet up with her.

Might it be one turn so quickly from little lamb to black sheep? In a jiffy? No, no! It wasn’t as easy as that!

However, for Sam, for her love, Marion was going ahead. To hell those constraining scruples!

Hell and damnation! Such scenario can’t be born in a kindness mind like Violet’s without an evil spell underlying. I suspected the Shamrock pub to be the big evil. Hence I sought advice from the old witch of Limerick. Right away I got this kind of limerick by email (The old witch is used to foretelling future and destiny by delivering limericks.)

There is a fairy upon the banks of river Orge
Who fiercely of her readers makes rise the gorge.
    Handling secret
    She does, Violet,
To entice, to puzzle, not to forge.

My reply to the old witch of Limerick:
Hi over there! Dull hag of Eire!
All you prattle is but drivel.
All that we knew from the first clue.
Just get to know that we bestow
admiration, esteem and love to Violet, the real witch of a writer, our enchantress.
You’ve been outdone, old witch of Limerick.
If you want to prove you be up to tell fortunes, tell us how the smells floating through the Shamrock crept into Violet’s spirit, what’s Marion destined for, lunacy, murder, death penalty, what else?

Bonjour Violet.

The die is cast and it's in the bag.

The perfect secretary whose fresh and flowered Cotton dress fastened with pearly button and a starched little Peter Pan collar was busy to type an insurance contract to a rich client . She was hearing from the other side of the partition, Mister Harry, the manager of the office, chattering noisily with two vulgar men who had not forgotten to bother her a moment ago, with their uncalled for hints. Harry had a strange way moving, unpredictable. He always was here, where he was not expected!... In a moment, calm come back, he was near her, cheerfully: - "Here are 40 000 dollars, sweetie! The deal of the day! Thanks to bank them from me, leaving, O.K. And don't make off with!" He teased her.

Silently, she had the idea to do it. She had found the key of Sam's happiness and hers. A new world! Life together! Love for even!

She wrapped the enormous amount of money in two pages of the daily and slided the whole in the bottom of her beggar's bag henceforth weighed. It took less time that she would have thought to leave everything.

That stupid-smiling man... those places... that damned town. She wouldn't see them. She always was on the motorway of the fortune when the shadow of a doubt was stealing. She felt her blushing. Her heart was pounding. The sweat stood out on her forehead. Summer became stifling, she thought. Her scarf on her head to hide her fairness, and her black glasses could have her passed unnoticed . Marion, beside herself, chosen to go to the Texas, where her lover, informed, would rejoin her.

Was it possible to change from the little lamb to the "black sheep"? In a flash? No! no!. It was not so easy! Nevertheless, for Sam, for her love, Marion was moving... hang those burdensome scruples.

    Hello,
I did it, for you .... Here's my try:

The die is cast and the good deal in the bag…

The model secretary in a fresh and flowery cotton dress fastened with nacre buttons and a small starched Claudine collar was busy typing an insurance contract for a rich customer. She was hearing through the wall partition Mr.Harry, the boss of the agency, talk loudly with two coarse men who had not failed some time before to annoy her with their unsuitable remarks. Harry used to move in a funny way, quite unpredictable. He was always in the place one did not expect him to be….in a second, things being calm again, he was cheerfully near her..’Here are 40,000 dollars sweetie ! The deal of the day ! Thanks for depositing all that at the bank in my place, when you leave ok? And don’t go away with it !’ he teased her.

The idea came in an underhand manner. There she had, just there, the key for Sam’s happiness as well as hers!

A new world! The life together! Love forever!

She wrapped the huge amount of money in two sheets of the daily newspaper and slipped the whole thing into the bottom of her carry-all made heavy now. She spent less time than she could have thought on leaving everything.
That stupidly-smiling man..those places…that damned city…would never see her again! She was already on the highway of fortune when the shade of a doubt came through. She felt herself blush. Her heart was beating wildly. Her forehead was dropping with sweat. Summer was getting stuffy she thought. With her scarf on her head in order to hide her blondness and her dark glasses she had a chance to be unnoticed. Marion, being in a state, chose to leave… hers…and go to Texas where her lover, once informed, would join her.

Could that be possible to change the little lamb into the ‘black sheep’? In a flash? No ! No! It was not so easy!

For Sam however, for her love, Marion was going ahead…To hell with those awkward scruples !...

    See you

On the other side of the wall partition, she was hearing Mr Harry, the boss of the agency, talk loudly with two common men who, a few minutes ago, had not failed to bother her with their misplaced remarks.
Harry had a weird and unpredictable way to move. He was always to be found where he was not expected ! A minute later, everything being quiet again, he was by her side, saying lively “ Here are 40.000 dollars, dear, the deal of the day ! Please make a deposit at the bank on my behalf on your way out, will you?

    Hello dear teacher Violet !

That is my translation of "White goose and black underwears" (part four)

The die is cast ("alea jacta est" in Asterix and the Englih) and it is in the bag. The model secretary whose dress in springlike and flowery cotton was shut by mother-of-pearl buttons and a small starched Peter Pan collar was busy with type of an insurance conract for a rich customer. On the other side of the dividing wall, she heard Mr Harry, the manager of the agency, loudly chat with two crude men who before had insisted with their unsuitable allusions . Harry had a strange and particular manner when he moved along, an unforeseeable manner. He mas always there where he was not wait !...In an instant, thre reinstate repose, he was near her lighthearted : "There are 40,000 dollars, my lovely ! The bargain of this day ! Thanks to you to deposit them in the bank for me when you will go out, in agreement with me. And don't go away with them, tantalized he. Slowly, the idea rised. With that money, she hold the key of Sam's happiness and her. A new world ! The life together ! The love forever ! She wrapped the very important amount inside two pages of the daily newspaper and put it in the bottom of her grip, from now on weighted. She spent less time than planed to leave all (to take French leave), that smiling man....those places...that blasted town...would see her no more. She was yet driving on the motorway of the wealth when "the shadow of doubt" introduced. She felt turn red, her heart beat wildly. The sweat fored on her front. The summer became suffocating, she thought. Her foulard on her head to hide her fairness and her black glasses (as her underwear !) can make her discret. Marion, very distraught, chose to leave ...her state...to go to the Texas' where her lover, informed, would get together with her. Was it possible to pass so quickly from the condition of a gentle lamb to that of a black sheep (pour rester dans la couleur !). In a flash ! No ! No! It was not so easy ! However, for Sam, for her love, Marion went ahead...To Hell, those inhibiting scruples...

We are very impatient to know the end, happy end !!! we hope. Waiting, thanks for that interesting novel. See ou rather read you soon !

Sorry to be ,once again, so late, Violet. I am struggling with big clouds, those of flu . I hope my test will not be too dark !

Thrown the dice! The "thing" is in the bag .

The model secretary, wearing a fresh and flowery cotton dress, fastened by pearly buttons and a small Claudine-collar, was kept busy with typing an insurance policy for a rich client . On the other side of the partition, she heard the boss of the agency, talking noisily with two vulgar men who just before didn't fail to importune her with their out of place allusions .
Harry had such an odd manner in moving, unpredictable . He was always where he was not waited for !... In an instant, once quietness back, he was near her, joking : Here are 40,000 dollars, my beauty ! The bargain of the day ! Thanks for depositing them for me at the bank, when you go out, all right ?..And don't leave with !

Insidiously, the idea came up .Here she was hanging Sam's happiness point as herself's ! A new world ! Life together ! Love for ever !

She wrapped the huge amount into two pages of the daily newspaper and slipped the whole into the bottom of her wallett-bag, from now on heavier . She needed less time than she would have believed for leaving all .

That laughing man, those places, that damned town would nevermore see her ! She was already on the fortune expressway when the "shadow of a doubt" crept of .
She felt flushing . Her heart was beating a parley . Sweat was beading on her forehead . Summer was going stifling, she thought .Her scarf on her head to hide her fairness and her dark glasses could let her unnoticed . Marion, beside herself, decided to leave her own state .. for Texas where her lover ,warned, would join her .

Was it possible a little lamb become a "black sheep" ? In the twinkling of an eye ? No! No! That wasn't so easy !

Nevertheless, for Sam,for her love, Marion was going forwards .. To hell with those cumbersome scruples !

    At last..

THE DIE IS CAST AND THE DEAL IN THE BAG !

The perfect secretary whose fresh flowery cotton dress fastened with nacreous buttons and a little starched Claudine collar , was busy typewriting an insurance contract for a rich customer. She could hear, from the other side of the partition, Mr Harry, the agency's boss, talking loudly with two uncouth men who had not missed the opportunity ,a minute before, of annoying her with their uncalled-for (if not filthy) remarks. Harry had a funny way of moving about, unpredictably. All of a sudden, he could be right where he was not expected. In an instant, the place being quiet again, he was near her and said cheerfully :-" Here you are, pretty girl ! 40,000 dollars! (forty-thousand). The deal of the day ! Thanks for going to the bank and deposit them on my behalf,as you leave, all right? ....and don't you run away with them ,love !" He added teasing her .

Slowly, as a dull pain , the idea crept up. She was now holding the key to Sam's happiness, as well as hers .
A new world ! Life together ! Love forever !

She wrapped the huge amount of money in two pages of the daily newspaper and slid the lot down the bottom of her beggar's bag (shoulder bag) which had got heavier from now on. That mirthful man..those places..that cursed city...would never see her again !.It took her less time than she would have thought to leave everything behind .
She was already on her highway to fortune when the shadow of a doubt invaded her. She felt herself blushing. Her heart was throbbing. Beads of sweat dropped on her forehead . Summer was getting stifling ,she thought . With her scarf on , concealing (hiding)her blonde hair and wearing (dark )sunglasses , she might well pass unnoticed. Marion, in such a state..left ..hers.. heading to Texas , where her lover, once informed ,would join her.

Was it that simple for a sweet little lamb to turn into a black sheep ? In the wink of an eye ? Oh! No! It was not !

Yet, for Sam, for the love of her life, Marion was driving ahead.. To Hell with those burdensome scruples !

See you with enthusiasm !

The die is cast and the money "in the bag".

The model secretary whose fresh and flowery cotton dress was closed with nacre buttons and a little starched "claudine" collar was busy typing up an insurance contract for a rich client. On the other side of the wall she heard Mr. Harry, the boss of the firm, chatter noisily with two "common men" who had the nerve to bother him very soon , with their misplaced allusions. Harry had a funny way of getting around without being noticed. He was always where he wasn't expected to be! In an instant, calm restored, he was near her, playfully: "Here's 40,000 dollars, my sweet! The money for the day! Please deposit it in the bank for me on your way out, OK? And don't walk off with it!" he teased.

The underhanded idea popped up. She had, there in her hands, the key to Sam's happiness, as well as her own! A new world! A life together! Love forever and ever!

She wrapped the enormous sum in two daily newspaper pages and slid the whole of it to the bottom of her purse (je ne trouve pas une traduction de "besace"), now weighed down by it. It took her less time than she would have ever believed to leave everything.

This hilarious man, these places, this cursed city ..wouldn't see her anymore! She was already on the highway to riches, when "the shadow of a doubt" came to her. She felt herself blush. Her heart beat wildly. Sweat formed on her forehead. The summer heat was sweltering, she thought. Her headscarf to hide her blondness and her dark glasses could help her pass unnoticed. Marion, in all her states, chose to leave her own for Texas, where her lover, notified, would join her.

Could it be that she went so quickly from a little lamb to a "black sheep"? In the blink of an eye? No! No! It wasn't that simple!

Yet, for Sam, for her love, Marion pressed on. To hell with these cumbersome inhibitions!

Some might think I am fighting yesterday’s battles by coming so late after the prize giving day when results, scores, good and bad points were allotted and, most of all, the model translation was released. If you think so (that I’m fighting yesterday’s battles), you are wrong. The exhaustive explanations Violet delivered about so many details of the text are so useful for learners of my kind that I needed much time to assimilate those notions. That’s stuff for several weeks reading and reading again, repeating…
Not only have I got to know a lot of new words, but merely have I honed umpteen unclear ideas that I was toying with in my mind.

Moreover I decided to learn by heart some excerpts in order to make exemplary expressions creep up into my everyday speech. If you want to get fluent that’s a trick I can pass on to you. First of all think you are a squirrel. If need be, concentrate intensely until you feel like a squirrel which could feel like some hazelnuts. Pass over the hazelnuts and right up step into the squirrel cage to make it rotate for two full minutes with saying again and again “Slowly, as a dull pain , the idea crept up.” or “in a wink of an eye” or “Harry had a funny way of moving about”. With some training you might be able to make it with the second sentence “She could hear, from the other side of the partition, Mr Harry, the agency's boss, talking loudly with two uncouth men who had not missed the opportunity, a minute before, of annoying her with their uncalled-for remarks.”

Dear Violet, as you take me personally to task on #15 with “innuendo”, what could I say? Without any spots on my face, I of course agree with the shade of meaning you point out there. “Innuendo” comes from Latin “in – nuere” akin to Greek “neuein” (to think, to conceive; to be wise; to mean). There are somehow Gods hidden behind “neueo/neuein”. Nuere (L) > to nod. Innuere (L) > to hint. As a result an innuendo is something like an oblique allusion, a hint, an insinuation, a veiled or equivocal reflection. Making innuendos (or innuendoes) is necessary the fact of clever people of the upper classes. Two UNCOUTH men talking LOUDLY, annoying the personal assistant or secretary of a CEO, couldn’t fail to make uncalled-for remarks.

As usual I enjoyed your 4th episode. I won’t tell you that I thank you, Violet, so bored you must be by so many people telling you “thank you, Violet”. I just figure out that it must be boring, for I for one have never lived such a position. But I know that your heart is as large as a good Samaritan’s and your mind enough refined to guess that mine is grateful to you without being necessary to tell it.

I really don't know what to say, gee. Thank you anyway for congratulating my long corrections. I've always considered them as important as the text itself...which is not a "model" , but my suggestion.
I had to look up "innuendos" in the dictionary, having never heard the word in GB.or overhere when hearing and working at English. I checked and saw :nasty remarks. The two men were not that kind of men...

I never feel bored with thanks ,when it is sincere and above all, if I understand I have been able to help and teach a few things. See you...

As the squirrel makes the cage rotate, it's by rote that I say again and again the same expression as to make it automatically come in my everyday speech.

May I take the liberty to come back to some correcting tips?

That reminds me what happened to me a long time ago. It was in Cork. I had met a young woman that I had taken out to grab a drink in a pub (pubs were already open to women in Ireland at that time). I wanted to know if we could order tea for two. I was gibbering a lot at that time, my English being bad and I mimed more than I spoke. So, with an asking nod to her, I raised my middle and forefinger. She stared at me, pulled a face and ran away. Up until now, I had never understood what for? From now on, thank to Violet’s Oie blanche… I will no longer use the middle finger to say 2 but rather the thumb and index.
Moreover I wonder whether the uncouth gesture inherited from the Hundred Years’ War is not equivalent across the channel to the continental raising of middle finger, rest of fist bound, with a wee move of the forearm from bottom up. So uncouth!!

That information Violet handed out makes me think that we would learn more about body language because gestures are culturally coded and are not the same on the continent, across the channel, in the States or Australia. As this outstanding anglaisfacile site provides video programs I would suggest that were released some lessons with pictures teaching gestures associated to the talk. That should be quite useful to both newbies in English language and to old people like me who are getting deaf.

A page is a leaf, made of a sheet of paper, but more commonly a single side of one leaf, since they are most often numbered. Wrapping the cash in two pages - two faces of a leaf/sheet - is somehow a metonymy. Why not carry the metonymy a bit further? To my mind, Marion wrapped the huge amount of money in the obituaries of the daily newspaper.
This personal opinion is just for my own pleasure’s sake because I am egocentric.

Thank you to everybody sharing Violet's story.
