Hello !!! I'm a new arrived on this site so i don't speak english very well and i don't write english very well, so excuse me for the mistakes !!
I think the english accent is best than the American accent because he is more beautiful !! Even if I watch a lot of Americans TV shows and I take a lot of there expressions !! lol (i don't know how do you say in english "lol" so I say it in french sorry).

Re: British/ American accent: your opinions by mariek123, posted on 16-05-2008 at 23:30:16
^^ lol is the same in English, standing for "laughing out loud."

I like most American accents as long as they are not too strong. Not all accents are the same in Britain... if someone spoke like the Queen where I live they would definitely get laughed at. Personally I just love French accents, and so do most anglophones, so don't worry about how you speak!

English English and American English are quite diffrent.fistly i thick pronunciation have a qiue difference.People pronounce the word differently in different country .and more .although in same country .not in same distric have a different .secondly ,the spelling of word are different ,such as "fall"and 'autumn".......
in my opinion .i like American English .beacause the rhythm .the tone ,the feeling ,,,,,,,,

There are no good or bad accents........as all accents are influenced by our respective mother tongues and the local language of communication.

I agree with you trainer: there is no good or bad accents.
But there is a standard one,the same one that all students should aim to learn.
The British one(from London)in that case(I think so because when I began to learn English it was the only one that I would listen to).
I am learning Spanish as well and even if we listen to many South American accents we all aim at getting a Spanish accent.

Why? Because as we all know English comes from England and
    Spanish comes from Spain

And I am sad to see that many movies, anime, etc are dubbed with an American Accent.

Well, first off, lots of movies are actually shot in the States so it's quite obvious to me that the actors speak with an American accent if they're Americans themselves. Second, you said it's sad that movies are dubbed into American English... Let's take an example : would you like to watch a movie dubbed into Canadian French??... the same thing applies here : Movies are dubbed into British English when they're shown in the UK and into American English when they're shown in the US.

And yeah another thing : American English may come from British English but it's developed differently over the years and now American English is widely used on the internet... even more than British English.

Personnely i like to speak the american accent i think it's easier than the british one and it is popular too.but don't forget that the british accent is the correct one because of that we learn it at school. thanks for this important subject.

"but don't forget that the british accent is the correct one because of that we learn it at school"

Gosh! This is exactly the kind of sentence that ticks me off to death... What's wrong with American English? So you think all the English-speaking people living in the US speak an incorrect language? Wow that surprises me a lot !!
No, what you mean is that American English actually comes from British English but as I said above it's developed differently and is now a new kind of "language" so to speak... OK British English is the one taught to non-native students but if you have an American teacher, it's very unlikely that he/she will teach you British English.

    Hello, everybody...
As far as I'm concerned, I think that American accent is more difficult to understand than English accent.
Indeed, I'm french and when I hear Americans (for exemple, in original and subtitled film) ; I think that they speak very quickly (perhaps they are scared from forgetting their text to learn ) and equally they don't speak very loud.
I don't know if you understand what I mean.
When I was younger, in English classroom, our teacher speaks more slowly and with a good British accent. And so, we understood very well.

In my opinion, it's sometimes difficult to understand British people speaking with different accents.
Generally, I find it easier to understand American accents.

In my country.English is one of the required courses. But I consider that our English teaching is a little messy. We studied British English several years ago.But in recent years ,almost all of the texts are about American English.
    I'm very confused.
May be the language I am studying is neither British English nor American English,it's Chinglish(Chinese English).

These days American accent is taking over English because of commercialisation and globalisation. As most of the things marketed are from American companies, the advts are made by American people and of course the main medium to spread a laguage being MEDIA is also mainly American, ie, TV and movies.

    Hi,
I like the Maori one and kiwi pakeha's too.
    Sweet as,bro.
It's really sound funny, some intonation are strange, and it's a mess with english and american accent. As the australian one, for the few i met.
Then, I like british more than american more differences between london ro yorkshire, like french accent. I don't get really well these geographical differences with the american accent, even they are a big one.

In my opinion,American accent is better than British. Because i think the rhythm .the tone ,the feeling sounds great.so i wish i can laern American accent better.

I think Britsh English sounds more sophisticaded but American English is easyer to speak (I guess..)\At high school we were tought BE but most of the time I speak American. Probrbly beacause I watch too many American soaps like Lost, Ugly Betty, Desperat Housewives,..etc

Re: British/ American accent: your opinions by domi23, posted on 24-07-2008 at 16:44:03
first of all, escuse my poor english.
when I was young I was fascinated by US journalist accent, when I was watching tv. The american accent is more pleasant to ear ,it's more natural .But there are a lot of terms like "wanna", "gonna" which are not appropriate in professional world. But British accent is too serious!!!
in conclusion ,there are good things and bad things in both of them.
I'm learning english,my dream is to speak clearly, without any accent,so that everyone will understand what I'm saying .I want to be able to adapt my accent.

As you can see my english is .... I'll do my best to progress

    oh~
    I from china~ I am a middle school student~
When we speaking English,we use the American accent.
Because our teacher teach us American accent.
But she doesn`t tell us why...

I find American accents really ugly, I know a lot of other people here too. My accent is Yorkshire, it is really strong and most Americans and French people don't understand when I speak in English.

Re: British/ American accent: your opinions by english-lover, posted on 09-08-2008 at 21:27:01
I had a really strong American accent a couple of months ago but I decided to go for British English so now I'm working really hard to change my accent back, because I think British English sound posh and pleasant, I especially like Northern accents, they are cute!
I also think that since I'm teaching English as a private teacher, I should try to look as 'refined' as possible so British English is definitely the way to go.
However, for casual conversation, I may revert back to American English.
