    Relative pronoun/aide
    Message from mohammad51 posted on 26-07-2023 at 20:06:10 (D | E | F)
    Hello
Can the relative pronoun be omitted ?

If it is possible to omit the relative pronoun, how can we say it?

    Thank you in advance

The dress which \ that the movie star is wearing weighs about fifty pounds.

    Hello,

If the relative pronoun is omitted it would be very strange to say it or to hear it !!

    Your example will be:
The dress the movie star is wearing weighs about fifty pounds.

There is no omitted relative pronoun 👍

    Hello
The dress the movie star is wearing weighs 50 pounds.

Let me agree with you dear teacher lucile83.

It also seems to me awkward or bringing confusion

Because it can be illustrated in two ways or more :

The dress that the movie star is currently wearing weighs 50 pounds.

The dress belonging to the movie star (but not necessarily the one they are wearing at the moment) weighs 50 pounds

Is it subject or object pronoun ?

    Hello
Sorry I knew that I was mistaken, but could not edit the topic because the reason I mentioned

The dress the movie star is wearing weighs 50 pounds. It leads to confusion
I recommend rewriting it as :

The movie star is wearing a dress which \ that weighs 50 pounds.

Here = subject relative pronoun and cannot be removed

Sorry, while I was writing the internet cut off suddenly and just now comes again.

    Hello

The movie star is wearing a dress which \ that weights weighs 50 pounds. (weight : noun, weigh : verb)

Here the relative pronoun can be removed without a bit of confusion

The movie star is wearing a dress weighs 50 pounds.

No, it's a subject relative pronoun (subject of "weighs"), you may not omit it (a verb needs a subject).
