    Notion/Myths and heroes
    Message de chloehuit posté le 17-04-2019 à 13:46:53 (S | E | F)
    Bonjour,
j'aimerais une correction de la synthèse que nous avons fait avec notre professeur d'anglais, je suis en terminale S.
    Merci pour vos réponses.
    Cordialement.

To introduce the notion of “myths and heroes”, I will give a definition. A myth can be defined as a story about gods or semi-gods, a popular belief or a false notion. A hero can be a mythological figure, a person who is admired for his achievements or a fictitious superhero for example Superman is a superhero. My question will be: Why does the USA produce so many heroes? Why there is a lot of heroes in the USA?

To begin with, I will talk about the first type of hero in the USA we studied in class. In the USA a hero can be a person who is disable to practice sports. Heroes are symbols of American values, in the video “America strong blind pole vaulter’s”, Charlotte Brown, a 15 year-old girl living in the United States who became blind when she was a child. She is a great sportswoman of high level, especially in the pole vault. She is blind. In my eyes, this athlete is a hero: either to handicap, to double, or to win competitions against valid and very fast athletes. Charlotte Brown has slowed American values such as bravery, tenacity, individuality and strength in order to be successful in her sport. She can also be considered a role model for other disabled persons. Some people say it can be luck or it's normal; it may be the truth, but she is very brave to have arrived there. Charlotte Brown can be considered a hero, a human being and a human being. It is possible to overcome the handicaps, to ensure that we have the courage and the will. In fact, other people in the world of sport are also considered true heroes in the world despite their disability such as Oscar Pisrtorius of South Africa. He is the first athlete to race with artificial legs in regular competitions such as the Olympics.

Secondly, there is also in the USA false heroes or heroes who lied to people that is to say famous figures in sport and politics who were seen as heroes but turned out to cheats, villains. For example, in the drawing of Lance Armstrong, it’s a caricature about Lance Armstrong because he lied, showed dishonesty which is contrary to American values. It goes to show that a hero is not always 100 per cent a hero. He can be talented in his field but can have defects (greed for money). In fact, He use drugs for best results and enhancing and he say to his friends “take drugs for best results”. He won “the tour de France” seven times thanks to that.

Lastly, in the USA, peoples had to face many opponents carrying out terrorists attacks because the USA is a country with a major economic and military power. In fact, in the painting by Tom palmer we see ordinary citizens in particular police and fireman. The 9/11 was an important day for the police and firemen because there is 2800 victims in the Twins Tower. But reacted bravely Heroes can be defined as people who do ordinary things at extraordinary time. The policeman and Fireman are considered as a hero in the USA even if they are normals persons, they save lives. On an other hand, The USA is a land of contrast. The American dream based on wealth, freedom and equality and is not accessible to everyone. Since the birth of the US, minorities have been excluded from this dream and discriminated. For example coloured people. So the USA needs some heroes who can reveal the world and reposted to equality. Some famous figures took risks. For example Tommie Smith won the 200 meters run and he threw his fist as a sign of protest when he got the gold medal, he used his victory to send a message about oppressed people in the USA in the document “From champion to Spokesperson”.

In conclusion, any country in the world need heroes. They are the mirrors of society. Their thoughts and actions are used as guidelines in our lives.
