    Apostrophe/ countries
    Message from mohammad51 posted on 21-09-2018 at 14:41:25 (D | E | F)
    Hello
    Apostrophe and names of countries?
    Please guide. Hope you answer.
I noticed somewhere they use the 's genitive ( apostrophe ) with cities to say for example:
    London's center
As we normally learned it is better to use OF
I can see it does not make sense or something to call a bad grammar.
The question below I noticed online :
    complete into possessive form
    ______ Metropolitan museum (New York)

    Also this one :
    The .......length (mattress)
Please help to solve the above two examples as fast as possible.
    Best wishes

    Hello,
______ Metropolitan museum (New York)...cities may be considered feminime; we can then use 's and say: New York's Metropolitan museum.
The .......length (mattress)...a mattress is a thing then we'll use of and say: the length of of the mattress.
    Hope it helps.

    Hello
Thank you and I agree with you dear teacher lucile83 .
You said " New York is considered a feminine" Let me say OK.
Suppose a country name is a male name like Iraq or Jordan, isn't possible to use the apostrophe?
I say : Iraq's civilization so as so to make it short than said , " The civilization of Iraq"
Is it possible or not ?
    Thank you in advance

    Hello,
It is up to you for countries; cities are talked about as 'she', like boats, ships, pets, sometimes cars!
