    Pieces/aide
    Message de timarosa posté le 23-03-2018 à 23:08:42 (S | E | F)
    Good evening!
Please I have a homework to do, and I need some help with it.
" It took pieces out of us, where we were."
the question is what does the word pieces in this sentence mean or refer to?
If you know that the two people were talking, they were in juvenile home for boys, where they brutalized, humiliated and raped them.
I hope somebody helps me with this.
    Thanks a lot!

    Bonjour,
C'est figuratif. Pieces = morceaux. With the context you gave they really didn't have pieces of their body taken but if you are attacked and raped then after something in you may be gone...you will never be the same.

Thank you so much for your answer, I agree with you but my professor expects another answer because after this quotation there is another paragraph "what we had to do to get out. Big pieces we didn't even know we had. Pieces we gotta learn to do without or find again. All that takes time. lots of time." and he wants us to explain it too. So if I did a mistake in the first certainly my second answer will be wrong.

    Hi
"pieces" in your context doesn't seem explicit yet .
But here's a suggestion: that could refer to "body organs" for example .
    Cordially

    bonjour,
Très difficile de répondre sans le contexte. l'histoire du livre, etc.
Je viens de lire l'histoire de "Sleepers" c'est un roman et un film.
These men lived some terrible experiences in the Home for Boys. They were raped, beaten and on of their friends killed by the guards. When you live in a place like that you will never be the same. What can someone who lived that lose? things they didn't even know they had? Their morals? later in the story they do unethical things to make sure their friends are not convicted. They want revenge against the guards.
So maybe those "pieces" they lost are the normal way of looking at the world...a belief that people are good...
their experience created a hatred against the guards and a desire for justice.
They realized that life is not always fair...they couldn't report their abuse because they knew nobody would believe them.
    They lost their innocence.
    They became somewhat bitter.
