    None of/have or has
    Message from bertouil posted on 16-03-2018 at 14:52:06 (D | E | F)
Bonjour, je prépare actuellement les concours des écoles de commerce, pour cela j’utilise un livre (les 100 pièges à éviter pour réussir l’anglais) et dans celui-ci j’ai trouvé ces deux phrases :
“None of our visitors this week ever drinks wine.”
“None of the children have ever visited a museum before.”
Avec la première phrase et la présence du “-s” je suppose que le groupe nominal “none of our visitors” est singulier. Toutefois la deuxième phrase ne porte pas le singulier mais bien le pluriel avec “have”.
Je voulais donc savoir si c’est une erreur ou bien si les deux formes sont possibles ?
    Merci !

    Hello,

None is a singular pronoun and should be used with a singular form of a verb.
"None of our visitors this week ever drinks wine" is correct .
"None of the children have ever visited a museum before" is incorrect .

It is held that none can only take a singular verb never a plural verb .
There is little justification, historical or grammatical for this view.
None is descended from Old English meaning 'not one ' and has been used for around a thousand years with both a singular and a plural verb, depending on the context and the emphasis needed.

    Hello,
When none is used with a plural - the singular or plural of the verb can be used. It is considered a "myth" that is sometimes taught that it can only be singular.

    So both sentences are correct.
