    Uncountable/verb
    Message de clo1949 posté le 28-02-2018 à 14:47:29 (S | E | F)
    Hello,
How can I say; which form is right?
ONE MILLION OF WATER BOTTLES WERE DRUNK
OR ONE MILLION OF WATER BOTTLES WAS DRUNK.
For me, that is "the bottles" that can be drunk and not "the million" so, the verb should be in the plural, shouldn't it?
Thank you very much for your answers.

    Hello.
ONE MILLION OF WATER BOTTLES WERE DRUNK.
OR ONE MILLION OF WATER BOTTLES WAS DRUNK.

Actually, water bottles is not as important as one million, since the sentence could stand alone without 'water bottles.' You note that water bottles is plural, but what do you say about one million? Is it singular? Plural? By the way, you don't need 'of'.

One million people live in that city. NOT One million people lives in that city.

    I hope this helps. Sherry

    Hello,
    erreurs en bleu
ONE MILLION OF WATER BOTTLES WERE DRUNK
OR ONE MILLION OF WATER BOTTLES WAS DRUNK.
For me, that is "the bottles" are the ones that can be drunk and not "the million" so, the verb would be got the should be in the plural, shouldn't it ? isn't it?
Thank you very much for your answer.

Commençons par les adjectifs numéraux, précis, qui sont invariables et pas suivis de of:

I have ten stamps, two hundred stamps, two million stamps, two million, seven hundred thousand, six hundred and eighty stamps...

Ensuite, on a des noms, vagues, du type des dizaines de, des centaines de, des milliers de, qui eux, se mettent au pluriel et sont suivi de of.
There were hundreds of victims in Syria.
    I have thousands of stamps.
There are millions of ill-fed people on the planet.
He has seen dozens of accidents: il a vu des dizaines d'accidents.

Comparez l'adjectif dozen: Give me two dozen eggs = 24
Et le nom dozen: He has seen dozens of accidents : des dizaines de.

    Donc soit on dit:
    Millions of water-bottles were drunk.
    Ou alors:
    One million water-bottles were drunk.
Verbe au pluriel , bien sûr.
