Reflexive pronouns
The personal pronouns me, te, se, vous, and nous can help you recognize reflexive verbs (verbes réfléchis) and reciprocal verbs (verbes réciproques). Some sneaky verbs, however, only LOOK reflexive! Whereas In the ten questions below, indicate whether the verb in the sentence is reflexive (réfléchi), reciprocal (réciproque), or neither (rien). HINT: to identify a reciprocal, look for MORE THAN ONE SUBJECT.
Je goes with me.
Je me lève.
Tu goes with te.
Tu te lèves.
Se goes with il-elle, ils, and elles.
Il se lève, elle se lève, ils se lèvent, elles se lèvent.
Vous goes with vous.
Vous vous levez.
Nous goes with nous.
Nous nous lèvons.
Se souvenir (de) -- to remember
Se douter (de) -- to think/suspect
Se méfier (de) -- to mistrust
Se taire -- to shut (oneself) up
reflexive verbs (verbes réfléchis) express an action returning towards the subject--like a boomerang--
reciprocal verbs (verbes réciproques) express a mutual action--like a tennis ball--between 2 or more subjects.
Elles se téléphonent. They telephone each other.
