À, au, and en in French are used to indicate different typesof prepositions.
À is used to indicate a destination or a place where anaction is taking place. For example, "Je vais à la plage" means"I am going to the beach."
Au is a contraction of "à" and "le" andis used to indicate a specific masculine place or destination. For example,"Je vais au cinéma" means "I am going to the cinema."
En is used to indicate a general location or a place wherean action is taking place. For example, "Je suis en ville" means"I am in the city." It can also be used to indicate a means oftransportation or a material. For example, "Je suis en train" means"I am on the train" and "Je suis en coton" means "I amwearing cotton."
