Imperfect indicative.
When do I have to use the imperfect indicative?
It is the equivalent of was doing, used to, would + infinitive or did
The imperfect is used for a description of people and things in the past =>
Il faisait froid, les arbres étaient gelés
mais les enfants jouaient quand même dans le jardin.
It expresses habitual or repeated actions in the past and there is no precise moment when an action begins or ends. =>
Quand j'étais enfant je venais souvent dans cet endroit.
To talk about a habit =>
Tous les jours je regardais cet arbre grandir.
To express the difference between 'before' and 'now' =>
Aujourd'hui je dors peu alors qu'avant je dormais beaucoup plus.
Formation of the Imperfect tense:
In order to have a verb in the imperfect form:
Take the stem of the first-person plural (nous) of the present indicative verb,
and add the imperfect endings -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
Notice:
If the verb stem ends in 'i,' the first and second person plural forms in the imperfect will contain a double 'i':
étudier: nous étudiions
An exception : the stem of the verb être is ét-: j'étais, tu étais, il était etc.
Notice:
The verbs ending in -cer or -ger change when the 'c' or 'g' is followed directly by an 'a' or 'o.' To obtain a soft sound, 'c' will add the cedilla (ç) and 'g' will be followed by 'e.'
Je commence => je commençais => nous commencions.
