Affirmative / Negative sentences
We can change an affirmative sentence into a negative one with :
Ne (ou n’)…pas, ne…plus, ne…guère, ne…jamais, ne…rien, ….
Affirmative sentencesLa population mondiale augmente régulièrement. Les hommes mangent tous à leur faim. | Negative sentencesLa population mondiale n’augmente pas régulièrement. Les hommes ne mangent pas tous à leur faim. |
Each of these four types of sentences (declarative,interrogative,exclamative,imperative)
can be written in an affirmative or negative form.
L’élève répond : Declarative affirmative.
L’élève ne répond pas : Declarative negative.
Est-ce qu’il répond ? Interrogative affirmative.
Ne répond-t-il pas ? Interrogative negative.
Réponds ! Impérative affirmative.
Ne réponds pas ! Impérative negative.
Comme il est sage ! Exclamative affirmative.
Comme il n’est pas sage ! Exclamative negative.
« Ne…pas »
Introduces the negation
You put it on each side of the verb if the tense is simple:
Il ne répond pas.
« N’a…pas »
You put it on each side of the auxiliary if the tense is compound:
Il n’a pas répondu.
Other forms of Negation are used :
Ne…pas, ne…plus, ne…jamais, ne…rien, ne…guère, ne…ni…ni, etc.
Il ne sait plus répondre.
Il ne répond guère.
Il ne répond jamais.
Il ne dit rien.
