Identify the verb in the sentence « The verb is a word that describes an action or a state of being. Its ending changes according to the Tense (Present, Past, Future), Mood (Indicative, Conditional, Subjunctive, Imperative) and Voice (Active, Passive). The verb ending is also modified to indicate the Person, Gender and Number of its subject. With these changes, the verb is said to be conjugated. » . lance Example : Pierre le ballon. a lancé The infinitive of verbs ¨ A verb is always identified by its Infinitive. The Infinitive is the basic, unconjugated form of the verb. Infinitives in French end in -er, -ir or -re. Examples : Nathan joue de la flûte → jouer Charlotte fait du théâtre. → faire ¨ A verb is composed of two parts : The main part (called the stem,root or radical) which never changes (for regular verbs only), and the ending which changes according to the tense and the subject. main part ending Chant - er (infinitif) je chant - e (présent) tu chant - es (présent) je chant - erai (futur) tu chant - eras (futur) ¨ The verbs whose main part can change are called irregular verbs : faire : je fais, je ferai. ¨ In the Present Indicative the verbs in -dre of the 3rd group generally end in : -ds, -ds, -d, -ons, -ez, -ent.
