The imperfect
A/ The verbs can be divided into three main groups according to the ending
of their Infinitive or Present Perfect form:
=> 1st Group: verbs in ER like “ aimer” , they represent about 90% of all French verbs
=>2nd Group: verbs in IR like “ finir” whose Present Perfect form is “ISSANT” and Present indicative form is “IS”
=> 3rd Group: all the other verbs in “IR” whose Present Perfect form ends in” ANT”
NB: this 3rd Group includes, around 30 verbs in “ OIR” like 'recevoir', a hundred in “ RE” . In this group, you’ll find irregular verbs and exceptions
B/To conjugate those verbs, you must analyse their root:
Je Tu Il/elle Nous Vous Ils/elles | AIMER - (AIM) AIMAIS AIMAIS AIMAIT AIMIONS AIMIEZ AIMAIENT | FINIR (FIN) FINISSAIS FINISSAIS FINISSAIT FINISSIONS FINISSIEZ FINISSAIENT | SENTIR (SENT) SENTAIS SENTAIS SENTAIT SENTIONS SENTIEZ SENTAIENT |
